Pounce - 5 Minute Freewrite (Day 67)

Crouched low, belly to the dirt, he crept forward. He watched her, tail flicking, eager to have his moment.

Something moved in the grasses behind her. A slider! She turned to the sound, back arched and tail erect. He stilled as she raised her paw. Watched her, legs tense and ready to spring.

A tang of blood danced in the air. Now!

On feet soft as fog, the little hunter slid out from beneath the green bush. He closed in on his distracted target, readying his pounce when, suddenly, he was grabbed. Something powerful spun him in an arc and slammed his little body to the ground! Head reeling, his forepaws instinctively wrapped around her head while his hind legs came up, digging into soft underbelly.

The grip released. Before his feet could get under him, he was knocked down and spun again! This time a sharp set of jaws closed at the back of his neck.

"Mom!" he yowled and squirmed. "Let go!"

Releasing her kit, the orange Queen sat back. Her paw came up and she lapped at it, catching the bits of slider flesh still on her claws. "Thought you had me, didn't you?"
