Nara Tōdai-ji

When we took train from Osaka to Kyoto, we would stop by Nara. Nara is a small place. And we decided not to stay in Nara. We planned to walked around in Nara in daytime then leave by the end of the day.

The luggage can be temporarily checked in the coin lockers in the railway station. Just remember to bring it back. I nearly forgot to take my luggage with me when I checked in the train.

After got off the train and checked the luggage, we studied the bus-route first.

The public transportation in Nara is simple. Most of the scenic spots can be reached by bus.

We went to Tōdai-ji first.

Let's have a briefing of Tōdai-ji. The following information is from Internet.

Tōdai-ji (Eastern Great Temple) is a Buddhist temple complex that was once one of the powerful Seven Great Temples, located in the city of Nara, Japan. Its Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden) houses the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana, known in Japanese as Daibutsu. The temple also serves as the Japanese headquarters of the Kegon school of Buddhism. The temple is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara", together with seven other sites including temples, shrines and places in the city of Nara. Deer, regarded as messengers of the gods in the Shinto religion, roam the grounds freely.

Outside Tōdai-ji it is Nara park. There are a lot of lovely deer here. The people can buy the deer-biscuit to feed the deer and get close to them.

Deer will be bowing when it sees someone is holding the deer-biscuit for food. Sometimes too many deer will be around you for the deer-biscuit.

We bought Persimmon Leaf Sushi, which were sushi wrapped in a persimmon leaf. It is local food and the persimmon leaves can feed deer.

Um, yummy!

In the afternoon we went to Kasuga Grand Shrine. We didn't go in there because they were decorating. Then we walked around there.

Normally people will wash their hands before going into a temple in Japan. It is said to clean the spirit.

Outside of Kasuga Grand Shrine area there are many clean and neat streets.

This was a shop for tea. It is a little disappointing not to go inside or to have a look since most of Japanese courtyards are very beautiful!

Then we walked around other places in Nara and left before getting dark.

Well, it was a nice day and we were happy with deer.
