You often hear of vacationers or travelers who lose something, get something stolen, or something breaks and it's a small tragedy; especially when that something costs way more than it had to. I once recall hearing about some famous rapper who got half a million dollars of "bling" stolen out of his hotel room. Very Un-Travel Pro. Solution, don't travel with expensive stuff!
I was once at a pool in Mui Nae Vietnam, and I watched a fellow traveler sit on her Gucci Sun Glasses which I learned she bought the previous week for 500 dollars. She began to cry. All I could do was just shake my head in disappointment. Another traveler I met complained about her new thousand dollar camera being stolen out of her bag in Panama. Solution, don't travel with expensive stuff!
When you're wearing a fancy watch, have an expensive camera hangin' around your neck, or sporting real Gucci sun-glasses, not only is it extra painful when you lose the item; it also makes you a target for thieves. If you're a poor thug from let's say Guatemala, and he sees you walking down the street with gold around your neck, fancy clothes, and whipping out that new I-Phone 7, you instantly become a target. Don't travel with expensive stuff! Especially to poorer countries!
I intentionally don't own or travel with anything overly expensive. This way if I do lose something or it gets stolen it's not as big of a deal, and it won't cost me all that much to replace it. My sunglasses I got in Mexico for five dollars. My touchscreen ASUS laptop I got on sale a few years ago in the US for under $300 refurbished and still works great. My new android smart phone I got in Mexico cost 65 dollars new. And I recently got a great used Samsung 16mega pixel camera for $50 in Bangkok.
If I lose any of these items, sure I'll be bummed about it. But it won't be the equivalent of losing a new Mac Book Air, that's for sure. So one last time! Don't travel with expensive stuff! Until next time - Dan "World Travel Pro!"
