My Steem Adventure #1: Embarking into The Unknown Sea of Open Source

Ever since I started my journey in Steemit 140 days ago, I was fascinated with the exposure of all these new knowledge about blogging, writing, blockchain technology, cryptocurrency and also open source concept. There are way too much for me to really digest in such a short amount of time. However, I am grateful to have met a lot of great friends within the Steemit community that gave me great insight to understand how it works. To be honest, as I keep on digging and learn more about the new tech, especially cryptocurrency and open source software (and even other open source projects), it gave me more insight on how the current world is moving.

Thus, I decided to start a journey of life-long learning about open source and all the related projects before 2018. This will be one of my 2018 resolution that is to have enough materials and knowledge to make presentation and promotion to my friends and family to be involved in open source projects.

The strategies that I am taking are:

  1. Contributing to blog posts on what I found out about open source projects (technical, guides, economic, social, environmental or philosophical)
  2. Engage with the Steemit community which is #teammalaysia
  3. Start up an open source project with my partner and buddy, @cklai

The intention behind for each strategy:

  1. As I have minimal knowledge about open source projects, not a computer guy nor an avid blogger. I find it tough at the starting point, especially I just randomly posted stuff and hope for upvotes. The experience was devastating, but luckily, I had met with a lot of great people and they helped me through until now. Hence, I want to understand more about the concept behind open source projects and spread the awareness and knowledge to my circle of friends and family.
  2. Personally, I think physical engagement is also important to spark a good relationship. I was hoping to meet @bitrocker2020 soon but I could not make it from time to time due to the crashing of schedule. However, I am positive enough that we soon will meet. I am glad to be part of the great community of #teammalaysia as well!
  3. @cklai was the one who introduced me to Steemit. He told me that I could earn through writpost posting it on the platform. At that time, my 2016 resolution was to write one post monthly and post on Linkedin. I was like, seriously? So, I tried it out, and it turned out to be true! Since then, I started to write like crazy and engaging different people just to know more about the whole ecosystem. Personally, I think my production for the past 140 days is equivalent to the past 5 years in terms of writing articles for my personal use. The motivation is real! So, the next thing we want to achieve is to start an open source project, that could benefit more people. In a way, it is a challenge for us too as we do not have any idea how to do it or what will it become. Nonetheless, we want to try and learn along the way.

So that is my introduction and a resolution as well as a new journey ahead. In addition, @utopian-io also provided a great platform (under blog post) to promote or share about the development and functions of open-source projects (does not necessarily to be Steemit).

I had planned a few topics to write about:

  1. Are open source projects Free of Charge?
  2. Is open source the way to create product/work in the future?
  3. How will artificial intelligence impact the development of open source projects?
  4. Will the concept of open source disrupt the existing industry?
  5. The case study of open source projects.
  6. What kind of talents do open source projects welcome?

So far, these are the main six topics I thought of and will be writing about them, perhaps in parts. This will be a weekly basis production as I will need time to study and balance with my daily work. Until December of 2018, I am expecting myself to produce at least 50 posts. So, each topic will have around 8 posts that discuss from different perspectives on the topic itself.

This will be very challenging, as it is a new forte for me to explore. Just like my favorite manga, One Piece. The captain, Luffy started his journey alone in a small boat, into the unknown sea. In real life, perhaps learn from Columbus. Maybe by the end of next year, I will find myself a big land filled with treasures!

I will be glad if anyone could just drop me comments to suggest more topics or drop some related links to me for references.
