A. Promoting Open Source Work on Steemhunt

Steemhunt is a newly established platform whereby hunters submit emerging new and cool products everyday. As such, it creates a big opportunity to promote Open Source Products via the Steemhunt platform.

On this platform, hunters can submit products that cover these 6 distinct categories:

  • Web services
  • Mobile apps
  • API, IT solutions, bots, open sources or other types of software
  • Tech gadgets, hardware, IoT/connected/wearable devices
  • Games
  • Innovative Engineering/Design Products

Ever since Steemhunt started a few months ago, hunters have been diligently seeking out cool products to share with the world. In return, hunters get rewarded based on their hunt ranks of the day. People come to the site daily to download and use these amazing products here.

Just imagine! The Steemhunt platform receives about 300 hunts submissions everyday. These hunts are evaluated and seen by thousands of users who visit this site. Since June, 2018 I've been one of their hunters and submitted cool Open Source Projects to this eager crowd. The results were pheonmenal as I saw people giving me feedback and downloading the Open Source softwares. Much to my pleasure, they are quickly using these Open Source projects which had been unknown to them all this while if it were not for my Steem hunts.

The purpose of this blog is to show you how to increase and grow your audience to promote Open Source projects or softwares via the Steemhunt platform.

B. What is Open Source Hunts?

Many people are not clear on what "Open source" means. Bascially, "open source" means that it is publicly accessible for people to modify and share with others. You will find many of such Open source projects, products, or initiatives on the Github website. The site embraces and celebrates open exchange, collaborative participation, rapid prototyping, transparency, meritocracy, and community oriented development.

When it comes to Open source softwares, the source code is made open to the public so that anyone can inspect, modify, and enhance the codes. This allows many other computer programmers to improve the programs by adding features or fixing application parts that do not work efficiently.

C. Increase an Awareness of Open Source Work to the Steemhunt Audience

It has been more than a month since my involvement on Steemhunt. When you search for "opensource", you will see that @rosatravels is the Top Hunter in this Open Source category.

With the recent new Account Based Voting (ABV) system and Diversity Score put into place, Steemhunt ranks your hunts accordingly. On the right highlighted column, Hunt Scores are listed in descending order showing the top hunts for Open Source work. All these top open source hunts are my submission in June.

The goal is to get your hunt scores as high as possible. Steemhunt ranking is also community based meaning that you need to create an audience who loves your work. This is exactly what I have done. The next step is to grow your audience to look for your hunts everyday. This is truly an effective way to promote Open Source Work. This is how my Open Source hunts gained traction with much visibility and love from the Steemhunt community.
