I STARTED NEW VR PROJECT TODAY!

Yesterday after quite a bit of planning I started a new VR project.

The project overview
A VR puzzle game where you have to solve all sorts of puzzles and explore through dangerous hallways while avoiding traps. The game will be fully playable not just in VR. Virtual reality will be the focus of this project.

Main features

  1. Reading books in VR. You will be able to pick up any book in the game and page through it like you would a real book. So feel free to find a cozy couch or chair and get your nose in a good book.
  2. Supports both major VR platforms as well as works without VR. When not in a VR headset the game functions like a first person exploration/survival game.
  3. There are hidden treasures throughout the game to find and unlock. Traps to avoid, mysteries to solve.
  4. Photo real environments.

Enough of the other stuff lets get to the art.
So the first thing I had to do is block out the environment. The first place I am making is a library/study in the game's mansion.
blocking out the level is an exploration of the shapes, forms, and silhouettes that will be found here. It is not final geometry it is to get a good idea of what should go where and why.
here are some screenshots of the block out.

First, we get a basic layout of the room.Screenshot 2017-07-04 10.25.50.png
Then we go through and add objects that fill the room a little so it starts to get some character.

We then add Anything that fills the room like bookshelves and functioning objects, the whole time not focusing on getting the objects to look right, just making sure the feel of the level is good. Making sure I can walk around and it makes sense.

Adding some stand in lights helps figure out what the player will see, these lights do will not ever be in the game, but they help get a feel of weight. Here is a blockout of a statue I posed. My friend Austin here.

Quite a bit of work for one day. Today I am going to add the spiral stair case, and a library ladder. Probably finish up the window. After that I should be in a place to go back and model individual objects that will be game ready. make sure to check in for more updates soon.

I just put the models into the VR engine to make sure the scale is correct. Here is a super janky video in VR.
If you have a cellphone or google cardboard you can check out the level in 3d watching this video.

Yo here is the latest update.
