Flags of the World #12: The Bahamas!

Hello fellow Steemians and welcome to my review of the Bahamian flag This is the 12thflag that I will be covering in my series to cover most of the flags of the world! I do this series mainly because I believe people have forgotten the true meaning behind flags, they not only represent a nation, they have their own meaning and history that is worth visiting and worth knowing about because it represents the people living in a nation and their beliefs.

The Bahamas is the first country to start with the letter B in the series! Thats a huge step forward but there are many more letters and countries to cover :-D

Today's Flag is the Flag of The Bahamas!

The flag of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is a horizontal triband with a black triangle located on the left side of the flag, the colors of the flag are aquamarine in the top and bottom, gold in the middle and the black triangle to the left. This flag was adopted in 1973 to replace the old British ensign flag from the colonial age (the ensign is at the end of the post with the other flags of the country.)

The current flag has been in use since the country gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1973 and the flag was a design created from multiple designs submitted by many artist to create a flag to celebrate the country's new found independence!

Meanings

The Aquamarine at the top and bottom bands symbolizes the island nature of the country and the surrounding water.

The Gold in the middle of the flag symbolizes the many resources the country posses and the shining sun above the island.

The Black represents the 3 pillars of life of the Bahamian people which are strength, vigor and force and the triangle facing to the right represents the will of the Bahamians to face the future in a determined and enterprising manner while developing and cultivating the naturals resources provided by the land and sea.

Other Flags!

The Bahamian flag before independence was the same British blue ensign used in other colonies around the world except that this one was defaced with the colonial with the coat of arms of the territory. This emblem has a really interesting story behind it, if you look closely you will see a ship and if you look to the horizon that big ship is chasing two other ships. In the colonial era before international rule over the seas, the people living in the Bahamas had so much trouble dealing with pirates that they decided it was a sound idea to put themselves on a ship chasing pirates in their flag! I call that pride in your line of work lol.

The emblem also has the words "Expulsis piratis restituta commercia" which means "Pirates expelled, commerce restored" another sign of their hatred against pirates!

There's also an alternative flag of the Bahamas which is almost identical to the country's flag, except that this flag is used exclusively by the Prime Minister of the country and it has a parliamentary mace placed vertically on the right side of the flag.
