Don't lose your audience because your posts take too long to load. In this microwave society, you will lose your viewers if your blog post is slow in loading. Often times, the slow load is because of large image file sizes.
Losing Viewers in Steemit Can Cost You Dearly
If your photos take too long to load, you could very well lose the attention of your audience.
Losing viewers can mean that your post is not getting the attention it may have received had the photos appeared instantly. Your message is lost and in Steemit, that can cost you upvotes, resteems and loyal followers.
TinyPNG.com to the Rescue
Before I discovered TinyPNG, I usually resized my photo size to 8 x 6 inches at 96 resolution so that it reduced the file size. By doing so, I reduced the file size from 10.7 MB to 544.9 KB. This increased the speed of load time, but I sacrifice the ability to offer larger photos to my audience. With this amazing site, I can now reduce the image file size while keeping my larger image dimensions. And, best of all, it works in compressing both .png and .jpg files!
Can you tell the difference?
See that the quality of the image is not compromised using TinyPNG. Minimal degradation, if any, is seen by the naked eye. That is so exciting!
Step-by-Step Tutorial
1. Drag and drop the photo you want to compress into this box.
2. Choose from one of 3 ways to download.
3. Save it and you’re done!
Old Way vs New Way
The last two posts I created will show you the difference. Each post has 3 photos to view.
Old Way: Reduced the physical size of photos in order to reduce file size
In my post on Sentiment in the Debris, in order to reduce the file size of my photos thereby increasing the load speed of my post, I reduced the size of the photo to 8” x 6”. The drawback is when you right click to save the photo; it saves as an 8” x 6” photo. Your audience loses the ability to expand it to see the intricate details of your photo.
New Way: Kept large size photos but compressed file size using TinyPNG
In my post on Flooded Photos Can Be Saved , I used TinyPNG.com and was able to shrink the size of the photo file down 86%. Now, you can see that it loads instantly. And, if you click on the photos to save them, you can get a photo size of 13.5” x 18”!
Additional Tips
- The free version of TinyPNG.com has a max file size you can submit of 5M. If your camera is like mine, the photo sizes and file sizes are much larger. I use a Google Pixel XL Android to take photos. I keep my settings at default and the photos I get are massively big. The Original Size of this Photo is 31” x 42” at 96 resolution with a file size of 10.7 MB! So in order to reduce the file size. If you resize your photo to 13.5” x 18”, you should be able to run it through Tinypng.com.
- Or, you can pay $25 per year to TinyPNG and submit an unlimited number of photos up to 25 MB each.
TinyPNG.com is #bookmarkable ... because some things are just meant to be saved.
