Apertus: The Open-Source Filmcamera

What happens if movie makers get fed up with having to use ridiculously expensive equipment that doesn't actually do exactly what they need it to do? They create their own camera.
The Apertus Axiom is the first open-source film camera developed right now.

Why Open-Source?

"Freedom of technology, information, education, knowledge, culture and arts doesn't imply that everything needs to be free of charge, but that these assets are controlled collectively."

"The apertus° project is based on software free to be used for any purpose, free to be studied, examined, modified and redistributed – which includes distributing your modified versions. Hence, products and services developed by apertus° are almost exclusevly released under GNU General Public License V3 . * Documentation providied is licenced under the Creative Commons License and the hardware under the Cern Open Hardware License ."

Apertus Axiom

The camera is designed to be modular, meaning each pcb has a distinct function and can be replaced easily if necessary. But the modularity doesn't stop there. You can swap out the sensor, use a different lens bayonet or add other modules later on.

Axiom is co-developed by the MagicLantern team that is know for their free addon for Canon DSLRs that unlocks hidden features of Canon cameras. The Axiom will have switchable film stock - you can change how information is read by the sensor.

Availability

The camera is still in beta with a lot of development still ongoing. Early backers ~about 500, are already receiving their early samples of the camera in their current state.
The camera will be hopefully ready after this summer, though this is not official.
