"Nascentia" | Gallery: Fine Art

When I was a child, I loved scouring the library for books about the universe.

I would take them home and read them, and then set about copying the diagrams into my own sketchbook, complete with labels. I will forever regret losing that sketchbook! (along with my box full of letters from penpals, magazine cut-outs and other notes taken during my teenage years...).

Anyway... My love of science and the cosmos, as most of you will have noticed, comes out often in the art I do. Discovering "Nascentia" was like being 10 again, discovering the cosmos for the first time and wondering in awe about my small role within it.

“... and I submit to you, that science, scientific discovery, especially cosmic discovery, does not become mainstream until the artist embraces the fruits of those discoveries.”
-- Neil deGrasse Tyson, Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution

“Out of the void and vastness of the cosmos, life emerges; audacious, improbable. You and I are here. No other miracle is needed.”
-- John Mark Green

The Creation Process:

Last week I showed you how I created "Etherosphere", remember? It started with these two formulae:

Well, I liked the development of the second formulae so much that I decided to investigate a possible independent piece using it. I loved all the swirly bits, which had already put nebulae in mind...

Too much swirly, though, I thought... I wanted something that looked like stars too! Stars are born in nebulae, after all. Just a little tweaking of one parameter got me this:

Definitely on to something now! ... So I changed the colours up a bit and tweaked away. The first two were good, but too much black space and too many concentrated little areas of light. The third one was too swirly again, with too few "starry" points. The fourth was, as Goldilocks would say, just right...:

Then it was only a matter of getting the colours right... I say only, but it was quite the task, which I agonised over for hours.

Also, if you look carefully at "Etherosphere", you'll see that the center bit is in fact Nascentia, but "fairified" ;P ... I loved the idea of having this amazing nebula seen through a magic "crystal ball" of sorts.

To end off, let me ask you... Is there anything from your childhood that heavily influences what you do today? =)
