It was a rainy day and Charlie Rabbit was at Margery Mouse’s house. They sat looking out the window at the big drops coming down. They splattered on the ground and then ran together to make large puddles in Margery’s front yard.
“This is so boring” said Margery. “I want to go outside and play.”
“Me too” agreed Charlie.
They sat and looked out the window some more, waiting for the rain to stop. But it didn’t, so Margery and Charlie went into the kitchen to get something to eat.
While they were sitting, sharing some cake, a drop of water fell, splat, on the floor.
“Oh bother” said Margery. “The roof is leaking again.” She went and got a bowl to put under the drip. It landed ping ping ping in the bowl.
Margery sat back down and cut herself another slice of cake, and one for Charlie. As she took her first bite, another drip started on the other side of the kitchen.
“Oh bother” said Margery crossly. She fetched another bowl and put it under the drip. Plunk plunk plunk it went.
Charlie got up and grabbed a frying pan to catch a drip that started over Margery’s stove. Tink tink tink went the drip. By now the roof was leaking all over the place, and Margery and Charlie were rushing around with buckets and bowls and pans trying to catch the drips. Soon the kitchen was filled with the sound of water dripping into the things that Margery and Charlie had put down.
Margery shifted a bowl that was nearly full, and replaced it with a pan. The drip went from plop plop plop to tink tink tink.
Charlie lifted his ears and listened. The sound of the drops falling was a bit like music. He shifted another bowl and heard the sound change.
“Hey Margery” he called. “We can make music with your leaky roof.”
Margery stopped and listened. Then she said “You’re right Charlie.” They both stood listening to the sound of the drops for a bit, then they began shifting the bowls and pans and buckets around to see what sorts of sounds they could get.
Soon Margery’s kitchen rang to the sounds of music and laughter as they made music from Margery’s leaking roof. They continued playing until the rain stopped, and the drips slowed down, and then they too stopped.
Margery’s kitchen was quiet again.
Oh that was so much fun” said Charlie. “I wish I could make music like that in my kitchen.”
“Yes it was fun” agreed Margery. “But now we have to clean up all the pots and pans and mop the floor.”
“I’ll help” offered Charlie. And he did. While Margery emptied the bowls and buckets and pans, Charlie mopped the kitchen floor. In no time at all Margery’s kitchen was clean again.
Margery cut two more pieces of cake and offered one to Charlie. They ate their cake and then ran outside to play.
