I love traveling. I will not miss any chances to go out of Hong Kong. When budget allows, I go further, stay longer, live and eat better. Otherwise, I am fine with closer destinations. People say "A book holds a house of gold" but at the same time "it is better to travel far than to read voluminously", so it is fair to say that traveling is as important as studying!
We "eat", we play, we buy when traveling and we also "look" - look at scenery. Scenery can be the wonderful natural landscape, can be the stray dog you bumped into, can be the beautiful couple walking towards you, can be the good food from local restaurant, or the nice piece of art displayed at the store.
We don't just look at scenery but also record them. For this we take photos and videos. That's why cameras are always on the list of equipment you carry on your trips. As technologies evolve, cameras also change from film to digital and now mobile.
Back to the days of film cameras, we had to decide how many roles of film, and of which types were required based on our travel plans. We had to stock up before trips began as we might not able to get supplies locally. With limited no. of films, pressing the shutter became an important decision. You wouldn't want to waste your money on films and photos by mindlessly pushing shutter. That's why we would spend lots of time looking and feeling. Then we took some time to structure before taking the shot. We used to press the shutter with great determinations and seldom regret and retake. That's was the time we "look" at the scenery.
Then came the digital cameras, compact, DSLR, Mirrorless and the mobile phones. Everybody has at least one camera. Films are replaced by memory cards. There is no more limitations on the no. of photos and videos you can take in a trip. Moreover, photos and videos are not only for records, but also for sharing, show off, for Likes! It is now quantity that matters, not quality.
Since it is more important to have quantity than quality (@shieha may have other opinions), people keep taking photos and videos. Eyes on the viewfinders rather on the views. Scenery are seen through the lens of cameras, they are all second hand! Traveling is now for the cameras, not for yourselves.
When I traveled to Barcelona, I spent a whole day at Camp Nou for a tour with Camp Nou as well as the soccer game of FC Barcelona. I found that what I remember most was not the performance of the soccer stars, was not the the tours which all captured by the camera. It was the encounter of Ronaldinho at the car park exit when he drove back to Camp Nou. It happened all in a sudden and I was not fast enough to take out my camera, so I witnessed the whole thing with my eyes only. Rest of that day, I could hardly remember any without the photos in hand. That's why "Second hand" is not as good as "First hand"!
Ever since I noticed this, I spend more time to use my own eyes and heart to look at the scenery rather than going through the lenses. Of course, I still take photos and videos, just not as many as before. I think it worth the tradeoff as I get much better quality of memories.
