Confusing Earth - Chapter 12: Rite

Chapter 12: Rite
The family arrived at Maree's school, Our Lady of the Holy Trinity. They went to the reception desk and Maree stood up on her tiptoes, reaching up to place the forms on the desk. A woman looked down at Maree and smiled. She then looked at the rest of the family.
"We are here to enrol me in this educational institution" said Maree. The woman smiled.
"Okay" she said, "I'll see if the principal can see you". The woman left. A minute later, she was back again.
"He cannot see you today" she said "Leave the forms with me and I will get him to ring you to arrange a time for the appointment. Do you have a contact number?"
Jack and Bella were dumbfounded. Bella bit her lip. They won't fit in. They didn't work out the numbers for their mobiles. Normal humans would surely know the numbers for their contact devices. This couple of seconds in time seemed like an hour to both Jack and Bella.
"I wrote it on the form" piped up Maree. Jack and Bella started breathing again.
"Okay" said the woman, "I will get him to contact you. Have a good day."
"Okay, you too" said Maree, "Hope to see you soon." They all turned around and walked out.

Once outside the building, Maree turned to Bella and Jack.
"I will provide you with the numbers for your mobiles when we get home"
"I am proud of you Maree" said Bella, "You did a good job getting all of your information filled out for those forms."
"Well, I did work in administration back home" said Maree, "But thanks."
"Yeah" said Jack, "Good work Private. Bella and I didn't know what to do about the mobile numbers."
"Thank you Commanding Officer Jack" said Maree, "The form was relatively easy. The only part I wasn't sure about was that it asked where I was baptised. I did not know what that meant but I asked Parrot about it and he said it was a rite for babies and wasn't necessary for me as I'm not a baby so I should just go along without it."
"A rite for babies?" pondered Jack, "We should do it for Liam."
"I don't know" said Liam, "What is involved?"
"I don't know" answered Maree.
"It doesn't matter" interrupted Jack, "It is obviously normal for people to put their babies through this rite and we want to assimilate with the humans so we are going to do it."
"So I don't get a choice?" argued Liam.
"No" said Jack.
"How will we find out how to?" asked Bella.
"I don't know" said Jack, "Maybe Parrot or Captain Speck have more details on it."

They walked home. On the way home, they passed a tall building with a bell on the top. The bell rang and out walked a male in black clothes with what appeared to be a lead on his neck and a female wearing a white one of the long things that females wear. They looked at the female and the male, then Max said, "I'm glad I'm not him. She's even got him on a lead."

"Yeah she's really got him lasered" muttered Jack. Bella frowned.
"That's a horrible term Jack" she said, "Just because someone does stuff for someone doesn't mean the other person is controlling them and have them lasered."
"Well look at him" Jack exclaimed loudly, and the couple looked up.
"He is wearing a lead" stated Jack just as loudly. The man looked confused, looked down at his suit and tie and then up at Jack.
"He is clearly lasered" said Jack, "She has him wrapped around her primitive human finger." The man and woman came up to Jack.
"Excuse me" said the man, "Stop talking about my wife like that. We just got married."
"I don't know what that means" said Jack, "But you're clearly lasered. You are wearing a lead, for Saturn's sake."
The man looked at his wife.
"Let's go honey" he said.
And with that, they turned and left.
Jack stood in silence for a moment, but then they continued to walk home too.
"And Jack worries we would make us stand out as aliens" muttered Max to Maree, "He should have dropped it. Still, I'm glad I'm not in that man's position."
"Marriage" mused Bella under her breath, "I wonder what that is?"
They walked the rest of the way home and then Jack ordered Max and Maree to watch the primitive holo-screen so they learned how to behave at school.
