TROPICAL TUESDAY: Pink Dragonfruit Coconut Smoothie (Raw+Vegan)

For this tropical Tuesday we are going pink! Dragonfruit or also called pitaya comes in different variations - pink or yellow outside with a white flesh on the inside and my favorite variety is pink outside with a a vibrant pink flesh hidden beneath the weird looking skin. The dragonfruit is actually the fruit of a tall cactus and although originally from the tropical parts of America, it is nowadays grown in many Asian countries.

Subtle sweetness behind a fierce look

The first time I tried a dragonfruit in Germany, I was quite disappointed with the taste, since the crazy look of this fruits makes you think that it blows you away with amazing, strong flavors. But imported goods from far away do rarely taste that great, so Germany was not really the perfect location to eat dragonfruits.

Malaysia on the other hand made me get excited about dragonfruit so that I now eat them almost every morning for breakfast. Its taste is still not bursting with flavors, but more like a subtle sweetness. The texture inside, especially with all the black little seeds, reminds you of kiwi fruits. And as you can imagine, its name is derived from the dragonfruits’ unique skin.

Coupled with coconut for the full tropical vibes

For todays tropical smoothie pleasure, I decided to keep it light and fruity by just adding some coconut flavors to the mild sweetness of the dragonfruit. Here is want you put into your blender for this colorful creation:

  • 2-3 bananas
  • 1/2 dragonfruit
  • 2 tbsp coconut meat
  • 1/4 cup of coconut water

Pink booster for your health

On top of its great taste and beautiful look, dragonfruit can also support you in your health goals. Rich in many nutrients, minerals, dietary fibers and antioxidants, dragonfruit can be a real blessing when fighting numerous health conditions. Among others, these are some of its valuable benefits:

  • Boosts your immune system
  • Supports your digestion
  • Prevents cancer and heart disease
  • Helps your body to detox
  • Lowers cholesterol levels

Well, at the end you profit the best from a fruit, if you find a delicious and ripe one...

How to catch a dragon(fruit)

For choosing the best dragonfruit out of a big pile of those pink fruits, you should look for a deep color and a skin with not too many brighter spots. If you press it gently, the dragonfruit should be hard but give in just a little at the same time. All in all, it is pretty easy to find ripe fruits on the market, but they can differ greatly in their sweetness. So if you find a trusted distributor with sweet and fresh dragonfruit, closely hold on to him or her.

I hope that I can share some of my fruity pleasures with you here from the warm Malaysian climate through my 'Tropical Tuesday' series this July. For the final smoothie creation next week, I will put together something really special for you, so stay tuned for more!
