The kernels within the grain stalk look like vitamins, but they taste like snap peas. He eats a few more and feels the energy coursing through his system. He had indeed been hungry and is grateful to the abbot for offering him this food.
"Take a few stalks with you!" the Abbot calls out to him, beckoning him over to the heavy wooden table that sits in a clearing at the center of the courtyard. He does just this, grabbing a hold of a few sheaves and tearing them loose, then carries them over to the table to join the Abbot.
The Abbott is pouring wine from a bronze jug into two cups made of clay. Overhead there are swallows that fly about within the space of the courtyard. Once having completed pouring the wine, the Abbot hands him a cup and motions for him to sit.
The Abbot offers up a prayer as a toast, raising his cup while gazing heavenward. "To the fullness of mind and spirit, and the returning of lost souls."
Drinking from his cup, he gazes at the Abbot and thinks, Amen to that.
