Telltale's Game of Thrones Review

The season 7 finale of Game of Thrones left me wanting more, so I fired up the ol' Playstation and played through the six episodes of the Telltale game Game of Thrones.

What's it about

Telltale known for their Walking Dead and Wolf among us games released the first episode of their Game of Thrones game in 2014. The game is a 6-part series detailing the troubles of the House of Forrester, a northern family under the banner of the Starks.
The Forresters are at odds with a neighbouring house the Whitehills. The origin of their dispute is ironwood, a special kind of wood that apparently is as tough as iron. This wood is very much favored for war and other purposes.

With the fall of the House of Stark things take a turn for the worse for this noble family. The whitehills are bannerman for the Boltons, the new wardens of the North. And as you can guess, the Whitehills waste no time to try and destroy their neighbours.

The game tells follows the lines of the TV show and contains some of the epic moments of the TV show (and books of course), although told from a different view point. You can expect to see some well known characters from the TV show make an appearance.

The style

The game is setup to mimic the TV show (not unlike Supermassive's Until Dawn). From the opening sequence to the recaps (last time on Game of Thrones). The whole game feels more like an interactive movie than an actual game (I mean this in a very positive way).

The game looks and feels exactly like Game of Thrones down to the immersive storyline.

Gameplay

The gameplay is just like previous Telltale games, during conversation you get 4 (or sometimes 2) choices. Your decision will dictate which direction the game will go.
Action scenes are quick time events, meaning you have to push the right button (displayed on screen) at the right time. If you fail this will lead to your death.

Visuals

Telltale is not about bleeding edge visuals and this game was released in 2014 so don't expect technical graphic excellence. But what Game of Throne has going for it is the accurate art, this game just makes you feel like you are watching a Game of Thrones episode and the lesser quality of graphics will "fade away" as you become immersed in the game.

Sound

It has the Game of Thrones soundtrack, do I need to say more?

The story

It seems to me that making an alternative story for Game of Thrones must be very challenging but Telltale just nailed it. It feels like a legitimate spin-off. Like Game of Thrones the story switches between characters in different locations (King's Landing, The Wall, Mereen, and Ironrath the Forrester House). The story is as engaging as the original and has the same tension and WTF moments as the TV show (minus the adult scenes).

You just know which answer I chose here right?

Final Verdict

The graphics may seem dated but the story more than makes up for it. An excellent adaptation (or rather spin off) of the the Game of Thrones TV show. I found myself "binge gaming" through the six episodes. The ending was a bit of a let down but that had probably more to do with the choices I made in the game. Apparently I am too proud to bend the knee, I was spitting in people's faces, slapping them, chopping of body parts and getting my revenge where ever I saw fit. As Cersei commented: "Proud but not very smart"
