Art Attack! #49: We Bare Bears go Camping! ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ

Hey Steemit!

We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!

Since it's been a while since I've shared a black-and-white minimalist piece, I thought I'd do another one! This time, I was inspired by a We Bare Bears colouring page I saw on my Facebook feed!

Since I had amassed quite a collection of outdoorsy-themed vectors from the previous pieces I've done, like this one:

And this one:

I thought I'd do another outdoorsy-themed one, but with my favourite Bears! They were a perfect fit as well, with the tent and their cave.

But the challenge would of course be to turn this into the minimalist style I had going. And combine it with the picture in the colouring page and these vectors:

It seemed simple enough, and I liked the river I drew in the second piece I did so I decided to incorporate that too.

This was the draft that I came up with:

And this was the final sketch!

I thought it actually looked pretty good, and the only trouble I had was figuring out how I was gonna do the shadow on the cave. But we'll get to that.

Time to get outlining! Naturally, I started with the background first since those have less details.

But then I reached the midground and I was torn on the same problem. So I decided to go for it and try a horizontal line approach to the shadow since that would match the shadow on the rock and trees around it.

I think it might be the length of it that make it looks a little weird. But what's done is done. Then I had the idea to sort of cross-hatch it instead but I don't think it improved it.

But whatever. Other than the shadow on the cave, I think this piece turned out great! The bears look cute, and the cave is still pretty recognisable. And I got to try out a different style for the mountains in the background and I think they matched the Bears perfectly!

I'm really happy with how this turned out! I'm glad I managed to capture the essence of the Bears and convert them into this style fairly successfully.

There was actually a minimalist piece that I did before this one, but it turned out to be a tad disappointing. I think the appeal of this style is definitely in the details, and in the simplicity of it. But because I took a different approach and just went simple but lacked details, it didn't turn out as I had hoped. Maybe I'll redo it in the future and share the process of evolution or something. We'll see.

Thanks for reading!
