A Dome For All Seasons – Part 2

Ok fellow Steemians. As you will recall from my previous post (A Dome For All Seasons - Part 1) I had become the proud owner of a solar dome which my son and I had dismantled and removed from a house that was being sold. The task now awaiting me and my willing(?) helpers was to re-erect it in a suitable spot in our garden.

Because of the urgency of having to move the dome within a day there had been no opportunity to prepare any groundwork for the base of the dome. That was the first task that needed to be tackled.

This was the area of ground that was earmarked for the dome. Human and dog helper all ready!

Mutley, our dog, was more than happy to lend a hand.

With his able supervision and digging skills the task of clearing and levelling the ground was completed fairly quickly.

He then made sure the base of the dome was completed correctly.

Next came the rebuilding of all the dome structure itself. Now I must make a confession here. I had to have a number of goes at putting this thing together before it went up as it was meant to. A lot of the struts only differed in their length by a small amount and trying so sort out what went where was more trial and error than good planning. In my defense, the problem was due to not having enough time at the dismantling stage to sufficiently label each piece. Excuses!!!

This was just a few pieces from the huge jigsaw puzzle we had set ourselves.

To cut a long story short, after a couple of days and a lot of colourful language the dome was finally complete.

This is the final result...

Ok - not really. This is the real one!

At that time it was home to my cactus and succulents but since then has fulfilled some of my initial vision by providing us with tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes and strawberries.

This year we have planted a couple of cherry trees actually inside the dome which we are training around and over the top of the dome. It will be interesting to see the results.

I would be interested to see what other Steemians may have built in their gardens or yards. Let us see them!
