IMMORTALITY vs. PURPOSE: Why do we age?

¡This is my old man!

He is ninety-three years old, for now Mr. Hitch and I are his only company, kitchen, go up and down stairs, sometimes eight floors to the apartment if you like, do not take a single pill, eat for three people Together, he is a liar, tells stories, technician of old televisions by hobby, funny and like every old man a little distracted

Living with my grandfather in his later years often makes me think about mortality, seeing him more jovial and healthy than twenty-year-olds, I can not stop thinking about what his secret is; In my heart I secretly want it to be genetic. Sometimes I even think we're going to bury all the scoundrel!

But let's face it, as Freddy Mercury said, who wants to live forever? Are not some of the great villains of literature and cinema those who are determined to seek immortality? Dracula, Tom Riddler (Voldemort), Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader), Morgana, Sauron among others that beyond power, dominion or fortune wanted to prolong their existence forever. And that's precisely why they became villains, they left their humanity, in search of the furthest thing from our nature.

Being mortal, finite, perishable, ephemeral is what gives us a motive, to take advantage of this sigh in which we pass through the earth. Now what does this have to do with aging, that our bodies and minds deteriorate is part of the cycle of life, is natural and healthy. But that's not really aging! My old man shows it every day, he always has a project, an idea, something to learn, some madness that he wants to invent, that's how it always was and that's how it will be until the soul dances and says goodbye.

It is the lack of "PURPOSE" that ages, according to the RAE "Determination firmly to do something" and it can not be that only purpose to continue existing "per se". It must be something beyond us that drives us to continue with joy every day, it is the lack of for that which grows old.

Yokoi Kenji, a Japanese-Colombian speaker, says very well that "A life with purpose is a life that deserves to be lived." I would complete that it is a life that besides giving personal satisfactions, will give me the opportunity to be immortal and eternally young in the memory of the lives that touch.

Your body may deteriorate, your mind may slow down, but you will never age as long as your soul is that of a child always with a why.

What do you think? Tell me your point of view in the comments!
