Before Bitcoin and Steem token become popular, people have been familiar with token coin. This photo I take is token coins of slot machine in a game center at Bogor.
Token coin have long history. There are many reasons people or company produce them. Sometimes they are just for game or a kind of currency. Wikipedia write:[1]
The key point of difference between a token and a coin is that a coin is issued by a governmental local or national authority and is freely exchangeable for goods or other coins, whereas a token has a much more limited use and is often (but not always) issued by a private company, group, association or individual. In the case of "currency tokens" issued by a company but also recognized by the state there is a convergence between tokens and currency.

Sebelum ada Bitcoin, orang sudah mengenal koin token.
Token koin punya sejarah panjang. Dia diproduksi sekadar untuk permainan atau memang jadi semacam mata uang.
Kehadirannya bisa dilacak sampai zaman Romawi dan sebelumnya. Di zaman romawi, ada token Red Dog Saloon yang konon dipakai untuk rumah bordil.
Di zaman modern, token punya fungsi setara uang. Misalkan, layanan telepn Italia dan Israel memakai token untuk menelepon dan nilainya stabil ketika negeri itu didera inflasi tinggi. Bahkan, token Kereta Bawah Tanah New York City kadang dapat diperdagangkan seperti umumnya barang berharga.[2]
