Naturally, it was an excellent rendition of Bolero, with which I was very familiar thanks to my classical music-loving mother, but I was a tad perplexed why on Earth they were playing it on KKGO, rather than KFAC, our local classical station.
And then, thunder struck and the ground shook!!!
Chick Corea let loose on the piano, wailing away as only a virtuoso of his caliber can play, and my mind was permanently blown . . . followed, in turn, by the cool jazz flute of Hubert Laws, smoothing over the raging waters left behind in Corea's wake. It was a transcendent moment.
I arrived at work, parked my car, and stayed to listen to the rest of the song as it played out, which was beyond outstanding. And, upon leaving for home that afternoon, the first stop I made was to my favorite record store, where I bought the album on the spot; Hubert Laws album, "Family." It has remained a favorite ever since, and although the rest of the album is excellent, "Bolero" is by far the standout.
Even better, both parents agreed that it was an outstanding take on a time-honored piece, which was nice, because although my mom liked a lot of jazz, my dad was not generally as fond of classical.
This remains, hands down, my favorite rendition of "Bolero." Enjoy.
