Anastatica & Selaginella lepidophylla are commonly referred to as the rose of Jericho.
Other names for the rose of Jericho are: the resurrection plant, resurrection moss, dinosaur plant, siempre viva, stone flower, & doradilla.
Anastatica, native to the Negev & Sahara, can also be found in the arid regions of Iran, Pakistan, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, & North Africa.
As Anastatica is native to the Middle East, it is called the real or true rose of Jericho.
Selaginella lepidophylla, native to the Chihuahan desert, is know as the false rose of Jericho
The Resurrection Rose
The resurrection rose comes to life when it touches water. While evangelizing the New World, Spanish Jesuits, Franciscans & Dominicans, employed the rose of Jericho to demonstrate the new birth to the native Indians that they were attempting to convert.
