On this most auspicious day of the year, let's go and stand in a line for a few hours.
Yesterday at shrine was busy. ...as always. Sometime during the first three days of the year nearly everyone in Japan visits their local shrine in a custom called Hatsumode (初詣, first shrine visit of the year). Typically this involves praying for good luck in the coming year, buying omamori (御守, good luck charm) and omikuji (御御籤, fortune), and waiting in line a long time. As you can see.
On the bright side of the line wait, if you arrive before supplies dwindle you might be served free warm saké and some kind of snack such as red bean paste. Always a plus.
