How to take low key photos using everyday objects

Do you want to take photos in low key and do not have professional teams to do it?

How about steemit friends, today again I share a little bit of my photographic tricks. A few days ago I made a similar post, in which I explained how to take photos in high key, using natural light and if you have not yet seen it I will leave the link at the end of the post, so this time I want to show them how to make these photos in low key, only using my camera and everyday objects, which we can find in our house.

But first of all, let's talk a little bit about this technique.

Just as high key photography is the one in which, color pixels move in the histogram covering the midtones and high lights, with almost non-existent dark areas and little contrasted, low key photos are the opposite technique to this one, where we see that pixels move in the histogram, from the midtones to the shadows.

    ¿Where does it come from?

This technique has its origins in painting, if you are a plastic artist I imagine that you are familiar with the technique of dark light, this technique consists in the use of high contrasts, between lights and shadows highlighting the contours, to transmit much more intense feelings (for example in nudity is very used, to give intensity to the message of the photo).

The photos in low key usually relate to the use of black or dark backgrounds, although they are widely used do not necessarily require a black cloth or a study, to perform this technique, let's say that the same thing happens in the case of its counter part, the high key (if you do not know what I mean, I invite you to read my previous post).

I didn't fall behind either, so I also took advantage of doing a self-portrait.

But let's go to what we're interested in, so here's what I used to take these pictures:

  • A dark room: Or any space where the outside light doesn't bother you.
  • A black tablecloth: I borrowed this from the kitchen for a while.
  • Two table lamps: As you can see, two simple table lamps with white light.
  • And obviously my camera: Words are superfluous.

Now let's go with the steps:

The first thing I did was to hang the black cloth on one of the walls in the room, with the help of a little adhesive tape, making sure that the fabric was as stretched as possible, even on black backgrounds a wrinkled fabric can be fatal, so beware.

That day I had the advantage of having several girlfriends with me, so I asked two of them to help me with the lamps, I asked them to stop one on each side of the girl to photograph, turn off all the lights in the room, except the two lamps, so that from here, I began to adjust the direction of the light, telling my friends where they should be placed.

The rest is history, I was just playing with the values of my camera and the lights, so as you can see, despite being a very simple lighting scheme, the result was to my liking, remember that I'm just showing you something very basic, low key photography is a very complex and wide world, in which you can spend hours and hours investigating as many variations as you can imagine, just show you a small door to go through.

    Some tips before you finish:

  • Move the background away from the person you are going to photograph, so the light from the lamps do not illuminate the background and it will be darker.
  • It uses low "iso" values, so we avoid noise in our image.
  • Remember to always shoot in "RAW". In this way we will be able to recover a lot of information from the lights and shadows in our subject.
  • And finally, if you're going to use a black cloth, try to make it matt so that it doesn't turn light back to the camera.

So if you're interested in applying this technique and think that because you don't have the necessary equipment, you can't do a good job, let me tell you that the truth is that you just need to let your imagination roll and start creating what you want so much, I hope this content will be useful, if that's all I ask you how you always give me your vote, comment and share this information with your friends.
