Throughout our lives we hear about the term self-esteem repeatedly but ... Do we know what self-esteem really is?
What is it?
Self-esteem is defined as:
Self-esteem is how we value ourselves; it is how we perceive our value to the world and how valuable we think we are to others. Self-esteem affects our trust in others, our relationships, our work – nearly every part of our lives. Positive self-esteem gives us the strength and flexibility to take charge of our lives and grow from our mistakes without the fear of rejection. | Source
We can say self-esteem is the result of our self-assessment about the qualities and abilities that each one of us possesses. Two situations can occur after evaluating our self-esteem.
If this evaluation is positive and honest, our self-esteem will surely remain stable and may even increase with time, as we become more and more happy with ourselves and with who we are.
Some of the known benefits of having a good self esteem are these ones:
- You are more resilient to troubles and difficulties that are inevitable in life
- You feel happy and content with your life because you respect yourself and other people respect you.
- You perform better at any task: personal or related to your studies or your job.
- You realize that you don’t need to be perfect so you feel less stressed. | Source
If on the contrary, the evaluation ends up being negative and even in many cases aggressive towards ourselves, our self-esteem will be seriously damaged, and therefore will begin to decrease significantly, allowing other feelings and emotions such as insecurity, sadness or despondency to find their way and affect us.
This condition has the following consequences:
- Having Relationship troubles.
- Neglecting Oneself.
- Having Fear, Anxiety and Depression.
- Halt your thinking pattern – Negative thoughts. | Source
Self-esteem is of great importance in the life of any human being, so much so that we must think of it as a plant to which we must provide food daily or as a muscle that must be worked conscientiously and under supervision in the gym for it to be healthy and fit. The same happens when we refer to our self-esteem, it must be worked on a daily basis with different actions. A very good way to improve your self-esteem is to put into practice the tips that will be mentioned below.
How can we help ourselves
The first thing you have to do is give yourself permission to celebrate your achievements whether it is a great goal or a simpler one. Enjoy and recognize your successes even if they are small, a success is a success, they are our achievements, YOUR achievements you got based on the hard and smart work you put into them, spending a lot of time and energy. Enjoy them, comment them, and feel very proud of them, because this in turn will help you significantly to strengthen your self-esteem or rebuild it in case of any circumstance or situation that has been affecting you negatively.
Next, try to consider the possibility of being less strict and less hard on yourself, we must be more able to understand that it does not help us at all to punish us so much and be so extremely hard on ourselves when we do not achieve an specific goal, as this might prevent you from being happy and enjoying life fully.
If you make a mistake, analyze it with all of your subjectivity, as if it were someone else's mistake, then analyze the situation in depth and carefully, in order to learn from the experience left by that mistake for which you blame yourself so much. Learning from mistakes is something we all need to do, because they help us grow as a person while giving us the necessary boost to move towards any goals we set for ourselves.
After we have recognized our mistake and learned from it, it is time to move into the phase of forgiveness. Forgive yourself and never think about that mistake ever again, instead think about the experience and the lessons that mistake has left in you.
- Third point, do not be afraid to express your feelings and emotions. Express your positive emotions and do not deprive yourself or deny yourself the possibility of telling your family or friends how much you love them and how important they are to you. Do not be afraid to express yourself, do not think too much about it, just say it what do you want to say and that’s it.
In the same way, it is crucial that you pay attention to your negative emotions and do not be afraid to communicate them to others if you are fully convinced that telling them to someone else will help you to feel better.
If you are aware that these negative emotions will never be able to improve your situation, then do not waste your time in them, instead put your energy, thoughts and actions into something else. Do not forget that every day is a new chance to increase our self-esteem and get to know ourselves a little more.
Conclusion
It is important for us to take care of our emotional state, being productive in our daily activities requires not only a good physical state, but also a proper mental well-being. If we are aware of how good or bad do we feel, and accept this whether it is good or bad, we can more easily start to fix any issue we might have that is causing us some disturbance in our thoughts. Besides, knowing ourselves and knowing how our mind works will always be something useful in the long term.
Of course, this does not mean we are going to try to be our own doctor, not at all, but we can certainly be the first in knowing which direction we should take, in order to improve ourselves, and improve our lives.
If we are honest with ourselves every time we apply self-analysis , either by accepting and appreciating our achievements or by accepting our mistakes, we will in the end, be happier, simply because we aren't lying to us and we accept us exactly as we are, which is something basic if we want to fulfill our most ambitious goals.
Are you honest with yourself when recognizing your successes and failures?
