Steem in the News : An Analysis of Media Coverage of Steem and Steemit - week ending 31 March 2018

One of the reasons we are told why the price of steem has not gone to the moon yet is that no one knows about it.

There are many ways that a new social media platform gets known - word of mouth of course being the hottest one.

Even in the best of times, a new platform will need more than just personal recommendations. It will need publicity, marketing and coverage in the press and media.

If you are very lucky a new platform will generate sufficient media coverage organically.

If not you need PR. And in an ultra competitive market like social media you need that PR to be smart, you need it loud, you need it often, you need it everywhere.

I am sure I will hear... "We are not ready for it yet. We are still in beta. Just wait for SMTs."

If you wait too long, it gets harder and harder to be heard.

The competitors have already boarded the bus just behind, and are catching up fast. Should steem wait til they have arrived and taken all the best seats in the restaurant?

So I thought I would take a raincheck on what media coverage steem is picking up around the world.

My methodology for this is quite coarse - Google Alerts - but from past experience it is quite effective for a top level overview.

I have been monitoring these key words and phrases for several weeks :

* steem | steemit | "Smart Media Tokens" | "Ned Scott" | dlive | dtube | "dsound"

Below is all that I have picked up for the past 7 days.

I have divided the coverage into a few pertinent sections to help you absorb the information more quickly.

“The HardFork series is one of the first projects of its scope to take this nontraditional, decentralized fundraising path,” explains Karr, who early on saw cryptocurrency’s potential for his projects. “For HardFork, Steemit.com was an obvious place to start with our community building and initial funding; it’s where we raised our incubation money.”

Steemit.com is a cryptocurrency-backed social media platform where artists earn money for content they post. The team raised an initial 30k on the platform by creating and sharing content, which was enough to produce a teaser trailer. The teaser debuted at Steemit’s annual conference in Lisbon, Portugal last November, where it received tremendous audience support.

Coverage about other Crypto Platforms that mentions steem, steemit or SMTs

26 Mar '18 | BestTechie | Synereo gives content creators more than just likes

Steemit, a platform that allows bloggers to earn cryptocurrency for the posts they contribute, is another company who understood the direction the industry is moving in. Both Synereo and Steemit understand where the success of the internet stems from, and the importance of allocating reward to the content creators rather than just the platform creators.

30 Mar '18 | CoinJournal | Can Minds Capitalize on Facebook’s Failures ?

On Steemit, a Reddit-like site that uses two different cryptocurrencies to reward content creators, there have been accusations of centralization leading to favoritism. On Steemit, holding one type of crypto determines how influential your likes and shares are and therefore how much of the other cryptocurrency you earn.

So that's all that Google Alerts has picked up in the past 7 days.

I am sure some has been missed. Of course I am only picking up English language news. And I am only picking up print and online media coverage.

I thought there would be more.

This low level of coverage suggests there is no PR activity at steemit inc. If there is it doesn't appear to be making much of an impact yet.
