There is nothing more fun or interesting as creating a communal story!
You can do this with any age group. I have done this with toddler children and I have done this at work when we were snowed in with the power off!
It keeps you all occupied, gets the creative mind flowing, and can even be used as a filler in almost any group activity!
How to Create a Communal Story
Start with a sentence or two to set the scene. "Jan and Steve were on their way to the museum. Steve had forgotten to fill the car with gas."
And it goes person to person, with each adding to the story. It can go as long as you need- I am part of a communal internet story that has been going for 6 years!
Tips
If you are studying something- use it! For a first grade class the only rule could be each student must use one of this weeks vocabulary words. For a second year law class you can use the obscure laws you learned this semester to create a very strange story of being in the wrong place at the wrong time!
You don't have to write or record it, especially if it's a story to fill in the seven minutes before lunch, but it sure is fun and the stories can get wild!
Use the story as a grammar and spelling lesson. Write it on the board, and each student corrects grammar and spelling in the last sentence before adding their own.
Your imagination is the limit. There is no right or wrong way to create a communal story!
