Make Writing Fun With Story Cubes

Whether you have writers block or a group of fifth graders who grumble about writing, StoryCubes gives you that needed creative push!

For over a decade, teachers, parents and writers around the world have been rolling fun and spontaneous stories with story dice that spark creativity for young and old.

Just like a handful of dice, you give the StoryCubes a shake and roll them onto the table. Look at the pictures and write a story based on them.

You can use StoryCubes for short stories or long. You can even use them for a five minute writing exercise!

Ways to Use Story Cubes

  • As Directed: the directions tell you to roll them out and create a story using the images that are face-up.
  • Pick two, and tell a contrasting story. Its easy to find similarities, harder to find contrasts.
  • Pick one cube and tell the story without using the word. For instance, you get the one with the key- you have to tell a story about a key without using the word "key".
  • Roll a cube and remember the picture. Then roll all the cubes and use them to tell the story from the point of view of the image on the first cube. Say the first cube was the lighthouse. You must tell the story from the lighthouses point of view.
  • Use them as a memory building exercise. Roll the cubes and take a photo. Allow your students to look at them for one minute. Using your photo to verify, see who can remember the most.
  • Make your own way to use StoryCubes! The whole point is to use your creativity and have fun!

There are several manufacturers of storycubes. For this article I used Rory's Story Cubes.

And with different sets such as actions, mythical, enchanted and fright, and you can add them together or mix and match.

Whatever you write, there's a set of cubes for you!

If you do not have the funding for the physical StoryCubes, guess what? There's an app for that! For $1.99 you can download the App for your class or personal use!

Have you used Story Cubes for your group? Share how in the comments!
