When I was a kid, I spent a lot of Saturday afternoons with my dad, drinking green tea and listening to music. And I remember clearly, on one of those afternoons, reading an article in the latest edition of "Stereo Review," one of the music magazines to which he subscribed, about Jean-Luc Ponty's latest album, which described him as an "electric violinist."
And I remember thinking; "Electric violin?" I asked my dad if he knew Ponty's work, he didn't, and I didn't think much more of it at the time.
Several years later, I was on my way to work one day, when the song "Once a Blue Planet" came on the radio, as I was again listening to jazz station KKGO.
I was transfixed. This was then, and remains, one of the most beautiful elegies to the incremental loss of our natural world that I have ever heard. And, as with Hubert Laws, after I heard his take on "Bolero" for the first time, upon leaving work I immediately headed to my favorite music store and bought the album.
Interestingly, "Forms of Life," from the same album, is the first piece of music that made me wish that I was a film editor, as it immediately took me on a mental journey deep into the kelp beds I had dived off the California coast. The kelp beds are magical, every bit as much in their own way as are coral reefs in tropical waters, and they perform similar functions in many ways; providing food, habitat and abundant hiding places from larger predators.
So may I present: "Once a Blue Planet," by Jean-Luc Ponty, from his album "Civilized Evil." Enjoy.
And I would love to hear your take in the comments.

The photo of our dog, Lolo, and our late cat, Miod, I took as they were cooperatively begging at the dinner table, despite our longstanding rule of not feeding them from the table.
You can see how much that deterred them both.
