Jeff Buckley's Music - Day 130 - Daily Haiku - Grace for Drowning, Part 3

Jeff Buckley, Lilac Wine, (From Live in Chicago)

Jeff Buckley's promise
old soul in young man's body
wounded and brave

Cori MacNaughton

This post is continued from my previous post, and is the third in this series on Jeff Buckley, and his music.

Although Jeff Buckley was determined that he would not use the tribute concert for his dad, called "Greetings from Tim Buckley,"as a stepping stone for his career, by the end of his powerhouse performance he was being offered a plethora of business cards, and a quiet bidding war began among several record companies.

Most pivotally, Jeff met Gary Lucas, with whom he played in the concert, who had formed the band "Gods and Monsters" a couple of years earlier, and Jeff agreed to join the band. In Buckley, Lucas found a rare writing partner of perception and depth, and valued their collaboration highly; but Jeff ultimately felt restricted, and after only a short time with the band, decided to go solo.

Ultimately, Buckley signed with Columbia Records, owned by Sony, largely because it had been the label of both Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. They gave him a three record deal, with complete creative control, and Buckley set about preparing to record what was to become the album "Grace."

As he and his band had only been playing together for about a month, he called in several veteran performers, including Gary Lucas.

Once "Grace" was released, in August 1994, although it initially opened to slow but growing sales to the public, it was immediately embraced by the music community, and appeared on numerous reviewer's "Best Album" lists in 1994.

Brad Pitt & Jimmy Page on Jeff Buckley

As Adam Protz noted, in Headliner Magazine, "Jimmy Page called Grace close to being his favourite album of the decade, and actor, Brad Pitt, had this to say:

"'Like the best of films, or the best of art, there's something going on underneath, and there's a truth there. And I find his stuff absolutely haunting. It just... It's under my skin.'

"Bob Dylan called Buckley 'one of the great songwriters of this decade,' and David Bowie included Grace in a list of albums he would take with him to a desert island."

Chris Cornell, of Soundgarden, was a close friend of Buckley's and they played many of the same clubs in and around NYC.

The following video is a compilation of reactions to Buckley's death, including Cornell, Gary Lucas and others, recorded just prior to his memorial service at St. Ann's Cathedral in Brooklyn Heights, NY.

Yes, the same church in which he had performed in the tribute concert for his father, a mere six years earlier.

Chris Cornell remembers Jeff Buckley and "Grace"

In 2012, a film based on Buckley's performance in the tribute concert, also entitled "Greetings from Tim Buckley," was released, starring Penn Badgley of "Gossip Girl" as Jeff Buckley.

The film did not have the blessing or cooperation of Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert, so they were unable to use any of Buckley's compositions in the making of the film. Evidently she was in talks regarding another film to be made about Jeff's life, but thus far, nothing has come of it, and it is uncertain whether it will be made.

That restriction aside, I found "Greetings from Tim Buckley," to be an enjoyable and surprisingly moving film, and thought that the major actors were excellent in their roles, particularly Badgley, who did all his own singing in the role.

My favorite part was the record store scene. ;-)

I claim no rights, but offer these videos, as I offer all the music videos I post, in the hopes of promoting my favorite music artists, so that more people become familiar with their music, and that they grow their fan base in the process, as they so richly deserve.

Jeff Buckley, absolutely, should be far better known than he is today.

The photo of our dog, Lolo, and our late cat, Miod, I took as they were cooperatively begging at the dinner table, despite our longstanding rule of not feeding them from the table.
You can see how much that deterred them both.
