Hummingbirds are here
searching for nectar, as they
search for their feeders!
Cori MacNaughton
Yes, our hummingbirds and fireflies are here, and back in force, and I need to get on the stick and start providing for them!
One thing to remember with hummingbirds is that they should NOT be given nectar with artificial coloring. I make their nectar with organic raw cane sugar, which is naturally a very light brown, and they do quite well with it . . . and, occasionally, they fly pretty much "in my face" to let me know that it's time to change out the nectar. Too funny.
The first year we were here, I was keeping out six feeders for them, but we don't have enough hummingbirds at any one time for that to be feasible. So for the past couple of years, I've kept out three: one on our front porch, in front of our computer room window; one on the back porch, in front of our kitchen window; and one on the south side of our house, under the old satellite dish.
This seems to be doing the trick, they are using most of the nectar, and little is going to waste. Perfection.
We got back later than usual tonight, and I took the goats into the barn well after dark, but happily as soon as I turned the corner and my headlights shone on the front porch of the studio, our little guest kitty ran across the driveway to the overlook over the barnyard. So, clearly, s/he has been sleeping in the cat carrier, which is good news, and has claimed the carrier as home.
I fed and watered the kitty, then took in the goats and fed them, and when I came back up, the kitty was still camped out by the overlook, waiting for me to pass so the coast would be clear to come eat. Very smart cat.
So Lolo's little tantrum of treeing the kitty hasn't chased it away, which is what I was hoping, and it does indeed seem to have claimed our place as its own. So it is a matter of time before it will, hopefully, allow me to approach more closely.
Life is wonderful.
And I would love to hear your take in the comments.

The photos of the hummingbirds were taken by me in 2012, during our first summer in Tennessee, when our ridiculous heat wave, of 110 degree Fahrenheit days for two weeks straight, made the nectar ferment pretty much the instant I put it outside. Which is an exaggeration, but not by much.
These were probably taken with my Canon PowerShot SX 30 iS camera.
The photo of our dog, Lolo, and our late cat, Miod, I took as they were cooperatively begging at the dinner table, despite our longstanding rule of not feeding them from the table.
You can see how much that deterred them both.
