Photos from Years Past - Day 89 - Daily Haiku

Darla and Cori, Renaissance Faire 1974, full shot.jpg

Photos from years past
friends and family now gone
lovely to see you

Cori MacNaughton

This photo is of me, on the right, and one of my best friends in high school, Darla, at the Renaissance Faire in Agoura, California. We were both fifteen when this photo was taken.

Held on the grounds of Paramount Ranch, where many well known western television series were filmed, I started going to L.A.'s Renaissance Faire with the members of a music class I was taking at Whittier College, studying recorder, the Medieval woodwind instrument. That class was where I first learned that I have a natural vibrato.

The deal was, if we showed up at the Renaissance Faire in costume, and agreed to wander about playing our recorders several times during the day, we could get in for free. Score!!!

Of course, this begged the question as to how to get there, since most of us were still high school students, and were not yet old enough to drive. And L.A. County is massive, and Agoura was a long way from where we lived. Thanks, Momma. ;-)

I got Darla involved after we both saw, and fell in love with, the Richard Lester-directed film "The Three Musketeers," starring Oliver Reed and Richard Chamberlain, among many other major stars, and so she was as excited to go as I. We both made our costumes, though both were more Elizabethan than truly Renaissance, which is typical of Ren Faire costumes even today. I even hand-tatted the lace on the sleeves of my dress.

Her costume was more period-correct, from the standpoint that she included a head covering; I have always despised hats or head coverings of any kind, and so went without, even though it was incorrect for the period. C'est la vie.

Years later, Darla created the costumes for several films, and the last time we spoke, costuming was still a serious avocation for her.

Unfortunately, although we were close friends for over ten years, we ultimately drifted apart and lost touch. But we had some great times together, and I very much valued her friendship, as I value everyone who has passed through my life, in whatever role. All have helped me to grow as a person, and to become who I am today.

All words are my own.

The first image, taken of my friend Darla and me, was taken by a photographer at the Faire, and I doubt if I knew his name even on that day. But I am grateful for his work, and that I still have the photograph, as it is a cherished memory.

I have a lot of wonderful memories at that Faire, with a number of different people over the years, and that is still the Renaissance Faire by which I measure all others.

The photo of our dog, Lolo, and our late cat, Miod, I took as they were cooperatively begging at the dinner table, despite our longstanding rule of not feeding them from the table.

You can see how much that deterred them both.
