Raining, Still Raining - Day 91 - Daily Haiku

Raining, still raining,
but I surprised the white cat
the last three nights straight

Cori MacNaughton

After not seeing our little white and black kitty for a few days, I was thinking s/he might have moved on, but then when I fed the goats one night after dark, we surprised him as we drove back past the studio toward the house.

S/he is interested when I call, and doesn't run away, but doesn't approach me, and leaves if I try to approach him/her.

The night before last, I surprised the kitty on the way down to feed the goats, as I stopped to give him food and water as well. I surprised him again on my way back up, which if nothing else confirmed that it has been him eating the food, at least some of the time.

Tonight I didn't see him on the way down, but fed and watered him anyway, and as soon as I turned the car around, my headlights caught his eyes at the edge of the porch.

I was glad our morning thunderstorms hadn't driven him away, which was a concern as I'm still not sure where s/he came from, but the studio has two covered porches, which stay fairly dry in wind and rain, so they're not bad refuges even without the cat carrier on the front porch.

With all the rain we got last night and today, I brought another towel for the bottom of the cat carrier, but I was glad to find that the towel was still dry, and so for the time being simply flipped it over to give him the clean side to lie on. I've left the towel in the car so I can switch it out as soon as is needed.

So the good news is that our little friend seems to have figured out that s/he is safe on our place, even if s/he still won't allow me to approach him/her. The night before last s/he seemed to be limping, but I saw no evidence of that tonight, so hopefully that was either an awkward angle or something really minor.

Meanwhile, I'll keep observing, feeding, and trying to gain his or her trust, so that I can get him or her fixed in the near future.

And, in the next few days, I am planning to move the carrier, with the food and water, down to our barn, where s/he will be much better protected from the elements than on the covered porch. The barn is much bigger and drier, and I've wanted a barn kitty for a long time, so this could be a match made in heaven. Wish me luck.

The photo of our dog, Lolo, and our late cat, Miod, I took as they were cooperatively begging at the dinner table, despite our longstanding rule of not feeding them from the table.

You can see how much that deterred them both.
