One Hundred Days On - Day 100 - Daily Haiku

One hundred days on
and still I'm writing haiku
and will from now on

Cori MacNaughton

Here are four of our lovely deer ladies that I surprised in our barnyard yesterday when I came down to let the goats out for the day, even though it was still raining off and on. I actually saw seven of them running, but four lagged behind, and they hung around for a few moments as I took several more shots of them.

There photos were all taken with my Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

The funny thing is that several ran away, and then ran back, and the ones that remained were watching me as intently as I was watching them. Deer are far from stupid, and they have figured out that I am not a threat, and that Lolo is not a threat, but they are still understandably quite cautious.

In this next shot, there are four deer in the photo; three are easy to see, but the one to the farthest left is the most difficult to spot, as she is well hidden behind the trees.

A doe startled the heck out of me the other night, when I was coming to feed the goats just after dark, and as I was preparing to enter the barn gate with my car, she ran right across in front of me about ten feet in front of my headlights. That gave me a start, but thankfully, due to the terrain and the sharp turn just after the fence, I was already going quite slowly.

Another time, I lad a large buck leap across the driveway just in front of my car when I was about to make the turn toward the studio, and as it was about dusk, that one gave me a start as well. He was quite large, and in close quarters, more than a little intimidating.

I recently bought a pair or deer whistles for the front of the car, which are supposed to cut down on the potential for accidents, so I'm hoping that they really work. Supposedly you only have to be going about thirty miles per hour for them to be effective, but time will tell, and hopefully I'll never have to find out. We have enough deer in our area, and their population is thriving, so vehicular accidents with deer are not at all uncommon, and are too often fatal, sometimes for all involved.

All words and images are my own.

The photos of the deer in our barnyard were taken by me yesterday using my Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

The photo of our dog, Lolo, and our late cat, Miod, I took as they were cooperatively begging at the dinner table, despite our longstanding rule of not feeding them from the table.

You can see how much that deterred them both.
