I am writing this from the airport on my way home from Austin and thought I’d share some of the amazing street art I stumbled across. I have been there all week for a work event and had a little down time this morning to explore the city. When visiting a place, I love to just meander the streets and soak in the vibes of the city.
One of the things I immediately noticed was how much cool street art there was! Austin is an epicenter for both music and art, and so this really comes as no surprise. Austin is one of the most socially progressive cities in Texas, and it shows in their street art too. A few of the murals involve political or socially liberal themes.
Some of the pieces were prominently displayed on main roads, but most of them were found in side roads and alleyways. I thought that was really great because it required a bit of exploring to find them. How many times do we just zip through our day, moving from one activity to another without even noticing the beauty around us.
I’m sure this is not a complete list of all the street art in downtown Austin, but I was pretty surprised at how much I found in such a small radius. All of this art was found between 2nd and 7th street downtown.
I hope you enjoyed getting a small glimpse into the art culture of Austin, Texas. This city was bursting with art, music and great food. I’d definitely like to come back when I’m not working and explore it more! Walking around the city for the sole purpose of discovering street art was such a fun way to explore a new place. I would highly recommend it if you are ever visiting a city that is known for their street art.
