Bible Verse of the Day #14; Godliness With Content

Godly Teaching

Any message that does not agree with the teaching of Jesus and does not carry with it a passionate call for godly character, moral purity, faith, obedience to God and separation from evil is a different message than that presented in the New Testament

1 Timothy 6:3-10

3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Men Of Corrupt Mind

Paul returns to the discussion of false teachers, informing Timothy what his judgement on such people must be. Those who seem unconcerned about teaching that is inconsistency with God's word or that clearly contradicts its truth deliberately ignoring the Holy Spirit's clear warning (Galatian 1:9).

Godliness... Is Great Gain

The false teachers at Ephesus may have appeared to follow God outwardly in order to maintain their influence and to make. Yet, they were motivated by greed and justify their selfish actions by clamming that their wealth was sign of God's approval on their teachings. Paul points out that what is really "great gain"-a sign of true spiritual riches-is "godliness with contentment".

To Be Content

Christians should be content with life's basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter. If special financial needs arise, we must rely on God to provide (Psalm 50:15) while we continue to work (2Thessalonians 3:7-8), help those in need (2Collossians 8:2-3) and serve God with generous giving (2Collossians 9:6-7). We must not be driven by a desire to get rich because "the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil"
