IBM and UBS Partner with Four Other Banking Giants to Create a New Global Trade Finance Platform, “Batavia”

Backed by UBS Group AG, IBM leads four other banking giants in developing an initiative to build a new blockchain-based global trade platform.

IBM and UBS initially formed this idea in 2016 and is now being joined with four banks namely Bank of Montreal, Erste Group, Commerzbank and Caixabank.

The new platform will be called 'Batavia' and will be openly accessible by any small or large organizations all over the world.

Batavia will support trade finance for all modes of trade transactions, including goods transportation by land, air and sea.

The group is still consulting with the transportation industry and their bank customers to ensure the flexibility and intuitiveness of the platform for customers and can be eventually released commercially.

The platform will have its pilot transactions with customers on the blockchain early starting of 2018 for testing and refining.

The Central Bank of Singapore has Introduced 3 New Blockchain Payment Prototypes

The Monetary Authority of Singapore or MAS, together with Association of Banks in Singapore or ABS has revealed a new set of Blockchain prototypes as the 2nd phase of the “Project Ubin”.

The project is an idea that started last year to tokenize the Singaporean Dollar and has grown today to its current development having prototype tools from all parts of the interbank settlement process.

Sopnendu Mohanty, the regulator's chief fintech officer hopes that this will create a spark for further research developments that will include those between the MAS and other institution alike.
