Hearty, Earthy, Healthy Classic Pinto Beans Recipe and Photos from Our Sustainable Outdoor Kitchen

In the fall, we like to make big bubbling pots of hearty goodness over the rocket stoves in our outdoor kitchen.

We make a lot of soups and stews this time of year, and beans are another staple to enjoy when the weather turns colder! A huge pot of pinto beans is satisfying, easy, and economical to prepare for a crowd. Beans are fantastic paired with cornbread (try our Jalapeño Okra Cornbread for a unique variety), rice, or Mexican food.

We use pinto beans in this food formula, but almost any bean can be substituted with great success. Not only can these pinto beans stand alone as a comforting main or side dish, they are great to use as an ingredient in any recipe that calls for beans. We love food formulas that multi-task!

Pinto beans are low in fat and high in protein and fiber. They are great sources for molybdenum, folate, vitamins B1 and B6, copper, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, manganese, and potassium. Delicious and healthy FTW!

Beans should be soaked overnight to remove some of the indigestible elements that cause gas, OR you can do a little pre-cook and let them sit for a bit in the hot water. We've included the second method in this formula.

Here is our food formula for CLASSIC PINTO BEANS:

We hope you enjoy these formulas as much as we like sharing! While all of our food is incredible because we have a unique relationship with it (more about our relationship to food in this previous post), we like to make simple staples from time to time in addition to our highly unique mouthgasmic creations. Pinto beans are just such a classic that can satisfy any crowd!
