Motivation

Helping put a man on the moon

Zuckerberg was inspired by JFK's moonshot.

One of my favorite stories is when John F Kennedy visited the NASA space center, he saw a janitor carrying a broom and he walked over and asked what he was doing. The janitor responded: "Mr. President, I'm helping put a man on the moon".

Zuckerberg's vision for moving society forward

Today I delivered the commencement address at Harvard. This speech was personally important to me, and I've been writing it for a long time. My message was about purpose. As millennials, finding our purpose isn't enough. The challenge for our generation is to create a world where every single person has a sense of purpose. That's the key to true happiness, and the only way we'll keep our society moving forward.

The world according to Zuck

Freedom v authoritarianism

This is the struggle of our time. The forces of freedom, openness and global community against the forces of authoritarianism, isolationism and nationalism. Forces for the flow of knowledge, trade and immigration against those who would slow them down.

Harvard is the oldest institution of higher education in the United States, established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was named after the College’s first benefactor, the young minister John Harvard of Charlestown, who upon his death in 1638 left his library and half his estate to the institution. A statue of John Harvard stands today in front of University Hall in Harvard Yard, and is perhaps the University’s best known landmark.
Harvard University
After God had carried us safe to New-England, and wee had builded our houses, provided necessaries for our livelihood, rear’d convenient places for Gods worship, and setled the Civill Government: One of the next things we longed for, and looked after was to advance Learning and perpetuate it to Posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate Ministery to the Churches, when our present Ministers shall lie in the Dust. And as we were thinking and consulting how to effect this great work, it pleased God to stir up the heart of one Mr. Harvard (a godly gentleman and a lover of learning; then living amongst us) to give one-half of his estate (it being in all about £1,700) towards the erecting of a Colledge, and all his library. After him, another gave £300; others after them cast in more; and the public hand of the State added the rest. The Colledge was by common consent appointed to be at Cambridge (a place very pleasant and accommodate), and is called (according to the name of the first founder) Harvard Colledge.

Creating a world where everyone has a sense of purpose

"You also have to create a sense of purpose in others by
  • By taking on big, meaningful projects together

  • By redefining equality, so everyone has the freedom to pursue their purpose.

  • By building community, across the world."

Zuck's philosophy

  • Ideas don't come out fully formed. You have to just get started.

  • Its really good to be idealistic. Be prepared to be misunderstood.

  • We do not take on big things because we are so afraid of making mistakes. We ignore all the wrong things today, if we do nothing.

  • Let's do big things, not just to create progress, but to create purpose.

  • The greatest successes come from havin the freedom to fail.

  • Every generation redefines its definition of equality.

  • We can all give time to give someone a hand.

  • Every generation expands its circle of people we think is one of us.

  • Our greatest opportunities are now global. Change starts local.
