Fireflies Are Twinkling - Day 138 - Daily Haiku

Fireflies are twinkling
trees covered with hundreds of
tiny dancing lights

Cori MacNaughton

Yesterday was not my favorite day. I awoke and started writing, and after an hour or so, realized that the fan I had thought I left on wasn't turning. I went to flip it on . . . no power. Again.

A quick call to our electric co-op fixed that, and to their credit they got us back up and running quickly, which is when I discovered . . . no A/C. I threw the breaker, I checked the fan, I checked the outside unit. The outside unit was working great. The inside unit had quit. Completely. Not even the fan was coming on. Oh joy.

Luckily, yesterday only got up to about 85 degrees here, so it was hot, but managed to remain something short of hell on earth. I did get hold of our friend Al, who has kept our A/C units alive and kicking since we've been here, and he promised to get here the following day (today).

I sweltered, then took a shower and went to bed, with the ceiling fan on high.

True to his word, Al showed up this morning, well before it had gotten too hot, and within a short time had our A/C back up and running again. Evidently our coolant level had gotten too low, and the unit froze up, hence why the inside unit wasn't even coming on.

And not a moment to soon, as it turns out, as today rather than 85 degrees, it got up to 95 degrees, so I thanked my lucky stars that the timing was as it was, as it could have been so very much worse.

And, now that he has added the needed coolant, it is blowing much colder, so hopefully it will be a long time before we have a repeat performance. Thank goodness for small favors.

The one magical thing that occurred last night, however, was that when I went to take the goats in for the evening, it was fully dark, and the fireflies put on a display so lovely it almost seemed to have been choreographed just for me.

I was standing in the barnyard, with trees all around, the fireflies were blinking throughout the trees, from ground level on up, and the spectacle was truly breathtaking. I could only be grateful to be witnessing such beauty.

Tonight the fireflies did their magic once more, giving me a truly beautiful light show in the barnyard, with the distant calls of birds just filtering through. Once more, flickering fireflies echoed the bright stars in the clear skies above.

It's easy to love this place.

Melaleuca, a company that has been making natural, eco-friendly products since the 1980s, that not only work as well as chemically laden versions from the supermarket, but are safer, and typically save money overall in addition.

I was introduced to them by a co-worker in 1990, lost track of them, and was thrilled to find them again about a year and a half ago. I strongly recommend their products.

All words and images are my own. The image above is one I took of the studio, at night, which I took with my Samsung Note 8 smartphone, this past January.

The photo of our dog, Lolo, and our late cat, Miod, I took as they were cooperatively begging at the dinner table, despite our longstanding rule of not feeding them from the table. You can see how much that deterred them both.
