Travel Pro Eats #11: Poo Hot Pot Buffet in Krabi Thailand and Some Travel Budget Tips! (14 food photos)

Hey there my Steemit friends. Today we head back to one of my favorite places on the planet, Krabi Town Thailand. I was recently there not too long ago. I found the "Poo" buffet one of my favorite restaurants to eat at in this small Thai City on the coast of the Andaman Sea.

There were three main things that I really loved about this buffet, and if you know anything about Steemit's "World Travel Pro" the price will have to be one of them! It has to be, or how could I call myself a professional budget traveler? After all, I've been traveling for over 11 years living out of backpack not working, just living on a small fixed income from investments. There is no way this would have been possible if I was burning through money carelessly.

Unless you have unlimited funds one main aspect of long term travel is not running out of money! Once that happens, you better go home and get a job! So I'm very mindful about my spending and over the years I have developed all sorts of strategies to stay on budget. One strategy is writing down the amount of money you spend each day. This really helps you know where you're at in regards to your spending and travel budget.

I try to stay on a budget of about $1,000 a month including airline tickets, and all other expenses as well. I'm proud to say that in 2017 I came in under budget averaging $941 per month. That includes the expense of traveling from Ecuador north to Mexico, then flying from Mexico to New York, then New York To Thailand and Laos, then to Florida and back to Ecuador where I began the year.

That takes some serious "Travel Pro Skills" to get around the planet like that and still come in under budget. So back to the three things I loved about this buffet and yes the price was one of them. Only six dollars all you can eat! So one expense every person on the planet has is food. With a little strategy and mindfulness one can keep this expense to a minimum while traveling.

I loved this buffet so much I ended up eating there almost everyday. I would spend about about eight dollars on food and water each day in Krabi, and nine dollars on my room. That came to an average of about $510 a month leaving $490 for leisure activities and to put towards travel expense.

While in Krabi Town Thailand, this food budget strategy came natural to me. I would go to the local market and buy some prepared fresh fruit for about 60 cents to a dollar, and that would be my breakfast. I would then build up an appetite throughout the day and maybe eat a banana for five cents if I needed it. Then I would visit this all you can eat buffet shortly after it opened around 4PM. I would get my one big meal of the day and be totally satisfied.

This is how I like to eat anyway. It's kind of like intermittent fasting. It has a series of health benefits and if you google this term you can learn all about it. For me it's not being cheap or not wanting to spend money, if I was hungry or wanted to eat I would. But this is how I like to eat, a little fruit for breakfast then a big meal in the late afternoon early evening; and boy do I get my six dollars worth!

So again back to the buffet. What were the other two things beside the price that I loved so much about the "poo" buffet? They had some the tastiest, freshest langoustines I've ever had. They are like little lobsters and I love lobster! So having all you can eat mini-lobster for six dollars, I couldn't help but want to eat there every day so I basically did.

All the employees got to know me. The "farang" (which is a derogatory Thai word for foreigner) who ate there everyday. One day I didn't go, they asked where I ate? Where were you? We missed you! It was quite endearing.

The final thing that I loved about this buffet was the thinly sliced pork belly. Studying the culinary arts and being a private chef for a short while I know that seafood and bacon go together hand in hand; and they had all I could eat of both. So I was in hog heaven loading up my "hot pot" grill with generous amounts of mini lobster and pork belly, essentially bacon.

This is the first all you can eat buffet I've ever been to that is all you can eat langoustine and pork belly! All for six dollars, I was really impressed. They also had fantastic spicy sauces all made with fresh ingredients. They had a large display of other thinly sliced meats I could BBQ at my table as well. I had a pot of boiling water to make my own soup too!

They had some fantastic clams so I would throw a bunch of them in the pot of boiling water, take them out, and eat this incredibly sweet and delicate meat. I would also help myself to handfuls of different cabbages and greens. I would wilt them in the soup for a minute and eat that along with my bacon, mini-lobsters, and clams.

Since it's a Thai "hot pot" buffet, you cook everything yourself. I find this fun. I really enjoyed going there and cooking what I wanted and how I wanted it cooked, then finishing it off with different sauces, fresh chilies, garlic, and lime. Without this buffet in town the food situation would certainly not have been the same. I wish every place I traveled in the world had a "poo" buffet, but there is only one; and it's here in Krabi Town Thailand.

Going back to the budget travel topic for a moment; one thing that should really be noted is that this article captures the essence of the "Travel Pro Lifestyle". This would be living on an amount of money that would be considered below the poverty line in my home country of the United States, yet traveling the world and eating mini-lobsters everyday!

Now I simply can't finish this post with making a childish joke about the name of this restaurant, or can I? One thing is for sure there was nothing crappy on the menu at this place! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute I was there and highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Krabi Town Thailand! Until next time- Dan "World Travel Pro!"
