Black hat SEO for text search misleads, a user to click a link. Black SEO for voice search misleads a Googlebot to activate a voice command for Google Home & Android devices.
The voice response is read off an entry from a Wikipedia page relating to the Burger King Whopper Burger.
Burger King's creative agency of record is WPP's David. WPP has not confirmed that its Miami office was the creative genius of the Whopper campaign, as mainstream media speculates.
Though Burger King's actions gained Burger King United & Trump like unpaid media, Burger King's creative team did not:
- Anticipate playful edits being made to the Wikipedia entry.
- Account for the outing of Fermachado123, a Wikipedia handle with an uncanny resemblance to Fernando Machado, Burger King’s Senior Vice-President for Global Brand Management. Fermachado123, had naturally attempted to set the record straight.
- Google not being amused at Burger King's gaming of their voice search. When Google shut them down, Burger King's had a pre-planned work around which did work for some more time.
- Burger King's Whopper YouTube video generating more dislikes than likes: 10K dislikes v 7K likes.
Campaign Fail?
Any attention, at all, may be good attention for Kim Kardashian but, not necesarily for United or for Burger King.
Was it worth the risk that Burger King took to antagonize some people?
Was Burger King justified intruding into homes?
Is this the shape of things to come?
