Chapter 15: Sister

Bella walked down the street with Liam in her arms and Max walking behind. Liam looked up at the wet droplets slowly sliding down Bella’s face.
“You’re leaking Bella” he said.
“I know” said Bella, “I think this is a way human beings show sadness.”
“What are we going to do now?” asked Liam.
“I don’t know” answered Bella, “Jack has got a bit too insulting to live with right now.”
“Yes, it’s a bit confusing for me” said Liam, “Jack, who I’ve now started to know as Daddy, is the same as me. I work for the organisation and while I wasn’t as extreme as Jack ever in my business career, I did think non-members were traitors or just poor people who don’t help themselves. But now I’ve been with you and Max and in this world, I’m finding you non-members are not that bad and are actually nice. So I’m a bit torn between my professional career and commitment to the organisation and the fact that you are nice Banbazoidians. Not that it really matters. I'm not the businessman I used to be. I’m a baby now so my assistance to or fight against the organisation is quite futile. ”
“Thanks Liam” said Bella. She kissed him on the cheek.

Max caught up to them.
“Bella” said Max, “Why don’t you call Nathan? He might be able to help us.” Bella mused over the suggestion for a moment.
“Our one human friend” said Bella, “Maybe we should call him. He might at the least help us find some housing until we feel comfortable to go back to our house again.”
“You’re not going to tell him we are aliens though are you Bella?” asked Max.
“No of course not” said Bella, “Which means you can’t talk around him Liam”
“Okay” said Liam.
Bella looked at her mobile.

“We had better get Maree from school first” said Bella. They walked to the school. They met Maree at the gate. Bella grabbed her as she reached the gate. She pulled her out of the way of the gate and hugged her.
“Maree” said Bella, “We are going to see Nathan sweetheart. Come on.” Tears welled in Bella’s eyes as she let go of Maree’s hand and continued to walk. Max followed. Maree ran along behind, yelling out to Bella.
“What’s going on Bella?” yelled Maree. Finally, Bella stopped walking and turned to address Maree’s concerns.
“Okay Maree” said Bella, “I didn’t know what to say to you because I didn’t want to talk badly about someone who has on this planet become your father figure, but Jack and I have had a bit of a falling out.”

“What happened Bella?” asked Maree, “And you don’t have to coat the details in something sweet like that sugar stuff that goes in coffees. I can handle the bitter details. I am middle aged in Banbazoidian terms you know.”
“Okay” said Bella, “Max left school early because he got into a fight about owning someone and Jack said Max was wrong and you should be able to own people. This lead to an argument between those two and then Jack asked me to tell Max the organisation is great but I couldn’t. Jack said Banbazoidians outside of the organisation are disgusting selfish scum that should just be dead. So I told him I am from outside the organisation and walked out.”
Maree’s jaw dropped.
“You’re not from inside the organisation?” she asked. Bella shook her head.
“All those times Jack has insulted outsiders like Max?” asked Maree.
“Yeah it stung a little” said Bella, “I put up with it thinking he was better than that deep down and he had just been brainwashed. It was just too much this time though. So much hatred. He was saying we should be dead and that we are scum.”
Maree was silent for a moment.
“Well I’m sure you’ve gathered I’m from within the organisation” said Maree, “And I don’t know what to believe really, after our experiences on Earth so far, but I feel ashamed one of us has hurt you Bella. You have been a great mother figure.”
Maree hugged Bella. Bella squeezed her tight.
Bella sniffed then pulled away from Maree.
“Thank you Maree” said Bella, “Now I had better call Nathan and see if he can help us.”

Bella went through her phone and found Nathan’s number. She rang the number. It rang for a moment and then he answered.
“Hello” he said.
“Hello Nathan” said Bella, and her distress was evident in her voice.
“It is Bella, remember from the shops?” she continued.
“Yes I remember” said Nathan, “Are you okay Bella? You sound distressed.”
“I’m not very well actually Nathan” answered Bella, “I am looking for a friend to help right now. I had a falling out with my husband and I have nowhere to go.”
“You have a husband!?” asked Nathan.
“Yes, you met him” said Bella surprised, “It was Jack.”
“The transvestite!?” exclaimed Nathan. There was silence on the phone for a moment and then after a deep breath, Nathan spoke again.
“Okay” he said, “Where are you at the moment? I will come and get you and you can come to my house and talk.”
“Oh thank you” said Bella, “I’m outside the Our Lady of the Holy Trinity primary school.”
“Okay I will be there in about ten minutes” said Nathan. He hung up. Bella turned to Max and Maree.
“He will be here soon” she said.

They waited for a while and then a silver primitive spaceship with no flying ability pulled over on the edge of the road next to them. One of the front doors opened and there was Nathan.
“Get in” said Nathan. Bella, Maree, Max and Liam looked shocked.
“You want us to get into that?” asked Max slowly.
“Well we’re sure not going to walk back to my place” said Nathan, “Hop in.” Nathan looked at them and then to the back seat.
“Chloe, get out of your car seat and just sit on the normal seat. They have a baby and he needs a car seat more” he said. Bella nervously opened the back door and put Liam in the car seat and sat down herself. Maree went to the front seat and sat in there, for a young human named Chloe was on the other back seat. With nowhere else to sit, Max sat on Bella’s lap. Max and Bella looked at each other. Nathan started driving and Max, Maree, Bella and Liam were all breathing heavily. Their thoughts were all the same ‘this primitive spaceship with no flying devices is a deathtrap.’
Maree felt faint looking at the console.
‘What primitive technology’ she thought. Max and Bella glanced at each other. They could not help thinking, ‘This would have worked better with Maree on Bella’s lap.’ As they turned a corner, Liam screamed.

Nathan and Chloe were oblivious to the fear going through their Banbazoidian travelers. Nathan started to talk.
“This is Chloe” he said, “She is my niece I am babysitting tonight.”
“Hi” said Chloe, “It’s going to be fun having you all over. Especially the girl my age. It will be like having a sister. What’s your name?”
“Maree” gulped Maree as she felt her chest pumping in an unusual fashion. She breathed deeply.
They finally reached Nathan’s home and the car came to a stop. Feeling relieved yet shaken, our family got out of the car along with Nathan and Chloe. Bella rocked Liam, whom was still shaken from the ride, once she got him out of the car. Nathan led them into the house and they sat down at Nathan’s table and talked.
“So what happened Bella?” asked Nathan.
“Jack and I had a falling out” said Bella, “He said he didn’t like people who come from my background and that we should be dead so I left him. He was being very nasty.”
“I’m sorry to hear that” said Nathan, “Well Bella, you and your family are welcome to stay here until you sort things out.”
“Oh thank you” said Bella, “Thank you so much.”
And this is the story of our family’s first sleepover, albeit without one member of the family.
