CHAPTER 25: THE HEAT IS ON
While driving to Gary’s, Cromwell has a sudden revelation. No matter where he emptied his clip last night, and regardless of if he actually shot someone or not, surely someone reported the gunfire.
He doesn’t remember any sirens or flashing lights last night, but that doesn’t mean anything. The detective veers into a parking garage and tucks his vehicle into a corner before pulling out his phone. It beeps when he opens it, since it’s still about to die, so he plugs it into the charger connected to the cigarette lighter.
Sure enough, as he logs into the police report database, multiple calls were received last night reporting gunfire. The cops must have shown up to investigate, and Cromwell had to be gone by then, wherever it happened.
By now, they would have identified Cromwell’s fingerprints on the casings.
The Detective thinks for a moment, and figures his best bet is to locate Gary as quickly as possible, if he’s still in town, and take him into custody, if he was still alive.
In Cromwell’s long career of drinking he’s never had to deal with anything like this. He wishes that he could remember something, and the complete blank that he is drawing is frustrating him all the more. Most likely, the cops will be looking for him soon, if they are not already.
This situation does not sit well with Cromwell. He’s supposed to be the hero, not the villain. He’s the good guy in this wicked world.
The detective slams his car in reverse and hits that gas, almost smashing into a vehicle driving behind him.
The hasty honk of the other driving causes him to hit the brakes just in time. That would have been the last thing that he needed at a moment like this. Once the car moves past, Cromwell is back on the road, heading to Gary’s.
But Gary’s driveway is empty. He parks and slips his pistol off of safety before approaching the house. There’s no answer at the door, so the detective rounds the house and peeks in the garage window. No vehicle.
Gary either bolted, happens to be somewhere else, or he never made it home last night.
“Did I really shoot him?” Cromwell asks himself.
Nothing in the database said anything about a fatality or victim, so he’s hoping that something else happened. Either way, he’s got to be careful and steer clear of the cops. Thankfully, it’s a weekend, so the Captain should be elsewhere and less detectives will be hard at work. The blessing of the skeleton crew.
Naturally, Ray’s apartment is the next stop, but it turns up empty too…
Cromwell punches the dash and lets out an angry growl as a church bell rings nearby.
Church!
Why hadn’t he thought of that? Well, the answer is obvious, but now the detective is racing to get there before they are dismissed for the day. Finally, church becomes useful to the detective. It should detain his quarry until he can make it there.
Thankfully, no police intercept Cromwell on his drive over. Sure enough, their vehicles are still there when he pulls in. The two apparently have not fled, and whatever or whoever the detective was firing at last night, it must not have been these guys. This is a huge relief.
Now, the wait begins. Finally, the pew-warmers begins to exit, and the detective starts to get excited. For minutes the congregation continues to leave the building and the parking lot, but the detective’s prey is nowhere to be seen…
Have they escaped him after all?
