Light The World Day 6

How will you #LightTheWorld? Have you caught yourself judging someone, only to find your perspective blown when you realize what you made up in your mind is not the truth?

Today's inspirational theme is Judge not, that ye be not judged.

A few years ago I was driving home from grocery shopping. I lived in a rural area so had to drive to a town 45 minutes through the wilderness.

The intersection heading out of town was busy. It was after 5pm, so people were leaving work and going home to make dinner.

Suddenly there is a lot of commotion and horn blasting. And old truck came tearing down the shoulder. He passed me and I will never forget the crazed look in his eyes. He was hauling; so reckless and fast alongside all the stopped cars I was afraid he was going to cause a terrible accident.

Many people were screaming obscenities in his wake. He drove through the red light, fishtailing between cars.

My eyes drifted ahead of his path. The road he was on disappeared into the trees.

There was a lot of smoke coming from behind the treeline.

My heart stopped. I immediately thought what if he has an elderly mother at home?

I noticed a couple of the more highly upset people maneuver onto the shoulder and race off after the man.

The fire had progressed so rapidly through the old growth forest that my State Route home, the road I had just taken two hours before to get to town, was closed. I had to drive another way, all the way around the sound, taking a four hour trip just to get home.

The road the man had raced down? The 11 o'clock news informed us the small community had been forced to evacuate suddenly. Horses were let out of pasture and slapped on the rump to take off and be gathered later as there was no time to load them into trailers.

Many homes were burned.

I do not know what happened to that man, but there were reports of elderly parents in several homes who had been rescued just before their homes caught fire.

Never judge another human being. You do not know the whole story.

That man holding a cardboard sign on the corner? Weather beaten and dirty and wearing stained and torn clothes? He is somebody's son. Somebody's brother. Somebody's father.

He was once loved beyond measure by somebody.

No matter what his history or how he got there, his soul is torn.

Would you look at the mangy stray mutt with a dirty collar and judge him? Why judge the dirty stray man? You do not know how he arrived where he sits today.

Kindness First

If you find yourself judging others, you can get out of the habit by immediately thinking the opposite. Find something good to think. You will train your mind and soon judgemental thoughts will be replaced with kind and sympathetic ones. Build a kindness first habit by imagining yourself in that position, thinking about how you would feel, and how you would hope others would treat you.

#LightTheWorld by making Kindness your first reaction.
