As you might have heard by now, Chris Cornell is dead. So I thought it was only right to include Soungarden into my "album of the day" column. Of all these "grunge" era bands that plagued the 90s, it is the one that I personally liked the most and never stoped listening to. Together with Alice in Chains.
Soundgarden -Badmotorfinger (1991)
I bought this album when I was in the military '92. Just waiting to "...break my rusty cage and run..." was real at the time, since I'm no huge fan of order and strict regulations. It was the MTV era and I remember vividly remember those grunge videos spewed out of a machine somwhere in the US. There was no end to it! Untill people stopped buying it of course. I think Badmotorfinger together with most, not all the albums from Alice in Chains has survived the test of time. And it would take me 20 years before I had a basic idea why. It was a friend of mine from London who pointed it out to me. "Badmotorfinger is basically stoner", he said. And he is on to something. Stoner, this timeless capsule where everything sounds very much the same but keeps ringing in your head untill you're numb. There is more to this album as well. But i listen to it differently today than I did when i was in the military.
In my view there is no fillers here. I have some favourite tracks, "Somewhere", "Salaves and Bulldozers", "Jesus Christ Pose", "Drawing flies" and "New Damage". It used to be the more up-tempo songs like "Outshined" and "Rusty Cage" but boy have I evolved since I was 20.
I had the chance to see Soundgarden in 2013. Which was nice. Comming from rural Norway it was impossible back in the days. And yesterday i learned Chris Cornell (vocals/guitar) had died. So i thought it was time to rush this album in this column. Rest in peace, Chris. You finally broke the rusty cage and ran.
