Leesol's Italian Journey 8 [Marcel Proust]

루브르 박물관에서 한 그림을 바라보던 한 남자가 있다. <잃어버린 시간을 찾아서>라는 한 편의 소설을 남기고 불후의 명성을 얻은 마르셀 프루스트다.

There was a man in the Louvre that appreciated an artwork. His name is Marcel Proust, a writer that left the masterpiece ‘À la recherche du temps perdu (In search of lost time)’

아무튼, 본론으로 돌아와서, 프루스트와 함께 그림을 바라보았던 친구 뤼시앵 도데는 그때의 일을 기록했다.

Anyways, back to the story. Lucien Daudet, a friend of Proust who appreciated the artwork with him, wrote about what happened there.

"도데에 따르면 하루는 두 사람이 한 전시실에 들어갔더니 도메니코 기를란다요의 회화 한 점이 걸려 있었다. 1480년대에 완성된 <노인과 소년>이라는 그 작품에는 인자해 보이는, 그러나 코끝이 뾰루지 같은 것들로 뒤덮인 한 남자가 묘사되어 있다. 프루스트는 기를란다요의 그림을 한동안 음미하더니, 이 남자가 그 당시 파리 사교계의 명사들 중 한 사람인 들로 후작과 꼭 닮았다고 도데에게 말했다." (프루스트가 우리의 삶을 바꾸는 방법들, 알랭 드 보통)

“According to Daudet, the two went to a gallery one day and found a painting of Domenico Ghirlandajo. The painting was ‘The old man and the young boy’, which was completed in 1480. In that painting, there was a man that looked generous but had lots of pimples on his nose. Proust admired the artwork for a long time and then told Daudet that the man in the painting looked just like a marquis he knew, who was one of the prominent figures in the high society."

프루스트라면 온갖 인상을 그린 미켈란젤로의 천장화와 벽화에서 자신이 아는 모든 사람을 찾아냈을지도 모른다. 서있거나 앉아 있는 것보다 누워있는 게 익숙해 보이는 그라면, 이곳에 그만의 침대를 하나 놓고 그림을 보고 싶어했을지도 모른다. 그러나 성당은 어두웠고, 천장은 너무 높았다. 사람들은 고개를 쳐들고 열심히 천장화를 바라보다, 목이 빳빳해져 고개를 숙이길 반복했다.

Proust might have found every person that he knew out of the drawings of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling and mural that Michelangelo drew. He was used to lying down than standing up or sitting, so he might have wanted to have a bed of his own here to admire the artwork. But the chapel was dark, and the ceiling was too high. The people in the chapel repeated to lift their heads to see the ceiling, then they looked down with stiff necks.
