Hoping it would ease the pace of his heart, Deputy Jamison cracked the window and inhaled the crisp night air. He had 6 miles left to make the arrest. His gut twisted, he needed more time.
Or a different Deputy. But that wasn’t going to happen. The order was his.
He could let the bus drive out of jurisdiction. There was no GPS in his patrol car. No-one would ever know…
But he would know.
Tears threatening to spill, he sighed and fingered his badge. The cold steel was comfort, but underneath… he hadn’t decided yet. In the pocket behind his badge rested the ring, the symbol of pure love and eternity. If he pressed harder it would ironically indent his heart.
He flipped the switch for the siren and lights. He mouthed a prayer as the bus slowed to the side, in hopes she wouldn’t die for her crimes.
