Chapter 23: Missing

Jack sat nervously on the bottom holding device at the table, stroking his dog. His table was covered in confectionery nutrition he bought to make up for his poor period on the streets and to make himself healthy again, but he could not consume it. He felt he would ooze nutritional sludge if he consumed anything at the moment, the way his stomach and body was feeling. The nerves were so intense it was like his brain was beating him up and rendering his whole being useless. Tonight could be the beginning of something big and great or it could be the end for him and his whole family. Jack’s dog licked his hand. Jack grabbed a square of the confectionery nutrition with milk written on it and gave it to his dog, who eagerly gobbled it up.

The portal opened. Through the portal appeared a familiar face.
“Payson” gasped Jack.
“Yes it’s me” said Payson, his voice sounding dreary, “And who are you?”
“It’s Jack” said Jack quickly.
“You ended up on the mission did you Jack?” said Payson and then without waiting for an answer said, “Gee you sure are ugly in that form. Do humans not have fur or scales?”
“Well not on their whole bodies” said Jack, “Humans have some fur. I can show you where”
“No it is okay Jack” said Payson. Jack zipped his pants back up.

“Well anyway Jack” said Payson seriously, “What do you want? I don’t have time to deal with this mission.” Jack shuddered. He and Payson had never got along and fear started to set in that Payson was likely to lead to the end. Still he was the one he got so he had to try.
“Well?” asked Payson. Jack realised he had taken a while thinking.
“We need help to overthrow the organisation” blurted out Jack. Payson stared at Jack, straight in the eyes.
‘Oh Neptune, this is the end” thought Jack.
“What do you need?” said Payson.
“You’re actually going to help us?” said Jack as he began breathing again.
“Yes” said Payson, “I never liked you Jack. The reason I didn’t though is because you were a brainwashed Banbazoidian who would do anything the organisation told you to. You epitomised everything I disagreed with. I never thought you would be one to turn. I have been against the organisation for years but had no avenue to actually achieve anything because I would just get killed or be one of those Banbazoidians who go missing for ages and then come back more brainwashed and injured. Now, what do you need?”
“Power” said Jack, “More Banbazoidians on our side and as much information as possible about the organisation so we can beat them from the inside out.”
“Okay, I’ll be your recruiter” said Payson, “But if I get caught…”
“I’ll be there to help you and share the blame” said Jack, “The rest of the family on the mission is left out of it though.”
“Okay” said Payson, “It’s a deal. Maybe finally after all of these years we can overthrow the organisation. Now, I had better go. Bye Jack.”
“Bye Payson” said Jack. The portal closed.

‘It’s beginning’ thought Jack. Now feeling content that things might start going forward, his stomach no longer felt so bad. He began to eat the confectionery nutrition. He ate the confectionery and then he thought, “Humans sure know how to make nutrition enjoyable.” Then another thought occurred to him.
‘Human’ he thought, ‘A human would be very useful to aliens on earth. We only know one human. Could Bella have got in contact with Nathan? Could that be where she is now? Where is Nathan’s home? ‘ Thoughts circulated in his mind, then he decided he would have to track down Nathan in case his family is with them and if not, being around a human must hold some benefit for himself.
He looked at his mobile phone, looking to see if he had Nathan’s number.
