Coffee Time Meditation #9 -- Sept. 4th

“Focusing on what you have instead of what you don’t have or want is the key to happiness.” — Harvey Volson

Thoughts on Today’s Quote

I have my basic needs met; food, shelter, clothing, transportation, reasonably good health etc.

When I focus on the fact my needs are satisfied I find that I can feel a sense of calm and happiness.

If I look at my basic needs and want more, I can almost immediately feel anxiety beginning to rise in my mind. When I want more, then I must then focus on generating the resources to get more. Depending on what I want, that may be as simple as a few bucks or it could be thousands. It might be changing my diet or adding exercise for more health and fitness.

The level of anxiety rises in direct proportion to what it will take to get more.

I know people who spend a huge amount of energy searching for what will make them happy. Rarely do they pause long enough to appreciate what they have, to enjoy that they do not have to seek what they have, they have already found it.

Now, that doesn’t mean I don’t ever look beyond what I have and set goals of attaining something else.

I just stay very mindful that what I seek is not happiness but something else be it a consumer product, travel, relationship, health, fitness etc.

I can experience the pleasure of attaining that something else when I get it but if something happens that I don’t get there, I can still be happy with what I have.

I see my oldest cat in the morning frantic to be fed, the youngest just waits patiently. Once both of them are fed, they come and visit with me and then find where they will go to sleep for part of the day. Their needs are met, they are happy and content to let the day pass them by.

Some days, I make like my cats and just let the day pass me by while I appreciate and enjoy what I have.

I don’t need to seek happiness, it is within my reach at any time.

Have you found your happiness?

Don’t know about you, but I find it interesting to know who the person was that anyone took the time to record or quote that person.*
